Trouble installing nest thermostat - only AC turning on, not heat

I could not install my Nest correctly. After installing I turned on the heat but the system activated the AC instead. I restored my original thermostat and everything worked fine. So I think I incorrectly configured the wires or a setting on the device. Please help.

My old thermostat, a Robert Shaw digital, has six wires. A blue wire which goes to C. A red wire which goes to R. A yellow wire which goes to Y1. A white wire which goes to E/W1. A green wire which goes to G. And a brown wire that goes to B.

When installing the Nest, I put the blue C wire in C, the red R wire in R, and the green G wire in G. I also put the yellow Y1 wire in Y, the white E/W1 wire in W, and the brown B wire in OB.

I then got a message that it did not recognize the wires in W or OB. The wires appeared fully inserted with the tab depressed.

When I turned on heat only the AC worked. With some cooling around I turned on cool and got the heat to work but I’m not sure how I did that and could not replicate it no matter what wires or settings I changed.

I can confirm my system works properly because when I reinstalled my old thermostat with the same wire configuration it worked just fine.

I do not have a heat pump. I do have a dual fuel system. My heat comes from an oil powered boiler that provides steam heat to radiators. My cooling comes from an electric powered AC unit.

I can provide pictures or additional information as needed. Please help. Thank you.

Do you have a Heat Pump system? You may have programmed the o/b terminal incorrectly when going through the during the initial setup.

I do not have a heat pump,

My only heat fuel is an oil powered boiler that feeds steam radiators

I also have an electric central air AC unit. An outdoor unit feeds into ductwork.

Both are single zone and connected to this thermostat. I have electric baseboard heating in my basement on an independent zone not connected to this thermostat.

If you have a dual fuel system then you do have a heat pump with secondary or emergency heat (your boiler). Your heat pump will provide heat until the temp outside drops below the setpoint you program. Typically most people select 40 deg F. Once it drops below 40 deg F, your heat pump will cycle off then your boiler will come online. It sounds you may have not configured it correctly.

I may have been mistaken in referring to it as a dual fuel system. I have one heating fuel (oil) and one central air AC unit that is electric.

Hi, @Chrismcasa!

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I apologize to hear that your heating isn't turning on after installing the thermostat. I understand how important a functioning heating system is, especially during winter. I'd be happy to assist you with your wiring installation.

To determine the correct configuration of your thermostat, please provide the following information:

  • A picture of your old wiring configuration. This will help me visualize the wire connections.
  • If possible, a picture of your control board. It's usually located near the furnace. This will help me determine if the B wire corresponds to the O/B terminal.
  • A picture of the current wiring configuration on your Nest Thermostat.
  • A picture of the configuration on the Nest or Google Home app.

Additionally, please answer these questions:

  • What type of thermostat do you have?
  • Is the thermostat displaying any error codes?
  • When did you install the Nest Thermostat?

This information will help me determine if the heating inconvenience is related to the installation or the thermostat itself.

Thank you for your cooperation. I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Ana
