My Nest thermostat (4th gen) just gave me an error code that the Google site does not even document, N417, including a dead g.co link. Other N4xx error codes are about power and wiring issues. Any clues as to what 417 could be specifically?

I will happily explain that the problem turned out to not be the thermostat. Two wires inside the air conditioner were touching and shorting.

Hi @RaymieHumbert,
Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand that you have been experiencing some issues with your Nest Thermostat (4th gen), this regarding the error code “N417” and “dead g.co link.” Let me help you with some information for this one!
The “N417” error message that you are getting means that the Nest Thermostat has an overvoltage/overcurrent error. This happens when the device is getting more power than it is designed to get, so when this error message appears, the best recommendation is contacting a Nest Pro to regulate the voltage that your device is receiving. Please take into consideration that the normal range is between 29 and 42 V; if it’s more than that, that is when the issue starts to happen.
I hope this information helps!
Best regards,
Debora

I replaced an older nest thermostat with a 4th gen and now i'm getting the N417 error. I have relanded all of the connections in the whole system and then replaced all the wiring and I still get the N417 error. checked the voltage and it's between 36 and 37. What do I do now? If I can't get it fixed I'll request a refund and go buy a different brand thermostat.

Purchased another brand Smart thermostat and everything is working fine now. I send the new nest thermostat back.

I have the same error code with my new Gen4 Nest thermostat which has been working fine for several months, only started this fall when temperatures dropped and when attempting to use the heat pump. Voltage is currently at 36.17V. Restart and even factory reset and reconfig did not solve problem. Reinstalled my old Gen2 Nest (that was working fine before the connectivity support was dropped) and the heat pump is working fine again. I’ll wait a while to make sure the problem does not reappear with old unit and then will call support again (they did not know what N417 was when I last called…) I expect to ask for a replacement or refund.

I just got the same error. You made us pay to update and then you send a device that does not work even though the old one worked fine? Fit it or I’m calling a lawyer.

I also replaced an older nest thermostat with a 4th gen and now i'm getting the N417 error. I have had two HVAC company's to come out and the error code has reappeared again. the wiring and I still get the N417 error. What is Nest going to do? I'm out of so much money between a new thermostat and service calls. Also, I have no heat!!!

My ac guy suggested putting a surge suppressor on the high side of the ac unit.
