Updated from Nest to 3rd Gen Learning. Have issues

When I upgraded it seemed like the house got colder.  We live in northern Illinois and it is January.   Today's high is going to be -2 f.  I was outside shoveling when I heard my central air unit running.  Not cool, pun intended.  I looked at Nest and it said heating.

I also have a sensor in the colder part of house to help even it out.

Waited four days for it to fix itself and no go.  I finally turned circut breaker off to AC unit.  Bam, the house got warmer and heat was even throughout the house.  Any ideas, thoughts, not a huge deal right now until I need to flip the breaker back on.

Hello Jakmmk,

Oh, that sounds like quite a chilly situation you've got there! I'm sorry for the inconvenience when a home upgrade seems to bring unexpected issues.

Firstly, I appreciate your troubleshooting skills in identifying the central air unit running during a freezing day—definitely not what you want. It's interesting that turning off the circuit breaker on the AC unit resolved the heating issues. It seems like there might be a miscommunication or malfunction between your thermostat and the heating system.

One thing to check is the wiring on your Nest Thermostat. Ensure that it's correctly connected and that there are no loose wires. If everything seems in order, can you share with us a photo of your old thermostat and Nest Thermostat's wiring setup? Additionally, considering the extreme cold in northern Illinois, it's worth confirming that your heating system is in good working condition. Regular maintenance, especially before the harsh winter months, can prevent such hiccups.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,
Mark

Mark,
Thanks for getting back to me.  We currently are on a preventative maintenance schedule set for every April.  I'm confident that our system is in good repair.

Enclosed are pictures of the wiring done with the new nest thermostat. I do not have a picture of the old wiring as it still had all the old stickers on it.  All I did was "plug and play" into the same slot on the new nest.

An interesting thing is, that the wiring is showing that we have a heat pump.  We do not, we only have forced air.

I am also using a sensor which has kept the house in a more comfortable place.   That said the system does run more often but we are more comfortable.

I did push the Y1 in a little more maybe that might help.

Thanks again, look forward to hearing from you.

Hi John,

Thank you for your prompt response and for providing detailed information about the thermostat installation and the current state of our HVAC system.

I have reviewed the pictures of the new Nest Thermostat wiring that you enclosed, and it's great to hear that the installation process was a seamless "plug and play" into the same slot as the old thermostat. I understand that the old wiring had stickers on it, and not having a picture of it is not a problem. But it appears that the blue wire should be at the C terminal, as you don't have a heat pump system. Try disconnecting it and observing first to see if there's progress. Also, you can verify how it was labeled on your system control board itself before attempting to connect it to the C terminal.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,
Mark
