Using nest 3rd gen as a stand alone temp sensor

I’ve seen a few posts asking how to use your nest as just a stand alone temp sensor and not controlling anything.  On these posts the Nest experts say it can’t be done so I searched the web high and low and still found nothing…well I figured it out!!! Purchase a plug in the wall 24vac transformer and connect those wires to Rh and C. Then cut a small piece of wire and put it in the W spot. Tape the exposed end so when it calls for heat it won’t put 24v where you don’t want it. Your nest will recognize all the required wires and will work properly. Only thing I don’t like is that you have to tap on the thermostat in your app to see the temp, instead of just seeing it on your app page. Nest if you are reading this please make a setting where you can change it to display the room temperature or the heat setting. Give us the option please and thank you.

Hello Mgassan,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Community Forum. I'd love to help.

I appreciate your thoughts about using the Nest Thermostat as a temperature sensor. When there is activity within 20 feet, the Nest Learning Thermostats 3rd generation can immediately wake up and transition to the Farsight screen. With its wide format and clear text, the Farsight screen makes it simple to read even from across the room. Please have a look at this article and let us know if you need more help.

Regards,

Mark
