When the temp gets really cold the heater in the house keeps running.

So, I have been trying to figure  this out.  AC dude says everything is fine but that is not correct.  During "normal" weather the system runs like a champ.  On and Off when the temps hit correctly.  BUT when we have really cold, maybe 20 degrees or so, the heat kicks on and does not turn off until it gets so hot the AC kicks in to cool it off.
This is a Heat Pump Unit:
My ASSUMPTION is that this is being caused by the system needing to use the "Supplemental Heat" as the heat pump is unable to generate enough heat in super cold temps.  It seems like it turns on the Supplemental Heat and "forgets" to turn it off.

Thoughts?

Do you have a heat pump with electric heat coils?

If yes then you need to set the heat pump balance to define how it uses the aux heat coils.

Thank you for your comment.  The "Balance" setting was set to Max Savings.  The duration ro run was set to 5 hours.  I tried moving that down to 3 hours.  I suspect I have a wiring issue.  I am going to pull the cover and take a picture for y'all.  The only way I know to stop the "run-a-way" heat is to turn the system off (which it still keeps pushing out heat) and then pulling the Nest out and counting to 10 then putting it back.  That "reset" seems to wake it up.  The problem here is this is Texas and we may not get another arctic cold front this year. 🙂  it will be 100 degrees soon enough.  But I will post a picture.  Thanks again for your help.

It looks like Houptee was able to help out with this one. I just wanted to check in and see if you needed anything else or to see if you're all set here. If there's more you need, just let me know.

Thanks,
