Wrong Nest Temp reading resulted in furnace running non-stop and above set temperature

Hello, I had my Nest set to Heating at 17 degrees Celsius which was working through the day no problem.
I woke up this morning to an over heated house, and a notification stating that "Safety Temperatures" reached (6 degrees Celsius).

The house was way warmer than my setting of 17 degrees Celsius however the current temperature read 8 degrees. I ended up resetting the unit. Once reset, the current temperature read 30 degrees Celsius!!!

My thermostat read the wrong temperature which caused my furnace to run endlessly reaching a temperature almost double what it was set at! Luckily it happened over night and I could turn it off/reset it before leaving the house.

How do I avoid this from happening again?

Hello Raj-Dhan,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you — let's see what's going on.

To isolate:

  • What type of Nest thermostat do you have?
  • When was the thermostat installed?
  • Where did you install your thermostat? (in a room and on a wall or stand)
  • Do you have other active Nest thermostats?
    • If yes: Do they show the same issue?
  • How big is the difference between the readout of the Nest thermostat and your thermometer or other thermostats after the reset?

I'll look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Mark
