I have an old gas furnace. no A/C. the thermostat I currently have is old school dial with a mercury switch inside. I took the faceplate off to check the wiring and I have ony two wires. one red, one white.
the white wire is labeled "HEAT" the red on is labeled "C" which I presume is common. the two wires are, I presume, simply closing the circuit to the heater when the mercury switch closes telling the furnace to turn on.
I can't tell with certainty whether a Nest is compatible with this. I presume it would be since it's just a switch but can somebody confirm?
would the white correspond to White on the Nest and the Red, though red in color correspond to the C on the nest?

Hello mfpaul,
Thank you for taking the time in letting us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look into this for you.
Nest Thermostats require a power wire, and the C wire, or common wire, only works to stabilize power. To determine your systems' compatibility, what type of heating system do you have? Also, could you send us a picture of your system's wiring configuration from the control panel showing how the wires are being labeled?
I'll look forward for your response.
Best regards,
Mark
