I had this problem Oct 11 2024 with a Nest Gen 4 thermostat and after fighting with it for about 2 hrs I found out you just need to uninstall google home app and re-install it. There was a post somewhere that said to update google home and that got me a little further through the process but still got hung up at the "choose the last 4 digits of your thermostats serial number" page with no way to enter numbers. Then I deleted the app and reinstalled and it finally worked. Just want to post this because I would have appreciated it.

Same for me, cannot connect my nest thermostat with my app. Scanning the qr gives a fault, putting in the 6 digits under the QR works but after it ask for 4 digits but it's not giving in input screen .. cannot return at this point and the home app get's stuck
