how do I change the batteries on a nest thermostat?

Our power has flickered during the blizzard we are in, in MI currently.  I'm getting an alert that the Nest battery is low.  How do I give it new batteries?

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I understand you're looking for instructions on how to change the batteries in your Nest Thermostat after receiving a low battery alert during a power flicker. I'm happy to provide you with the information requested.

Could you please confirm which Nest Thermostat model you have?

• You can identify the model of your Nest Thermostat by comparing it with the ones shown in the article How to tell which Nest thermostat you have.

In the meantime, please note that most Nest Thermostat displays are designed to be recharged rather than using replaceable batteries. The exceptions and charging methods are listed below:

• Nest Thermostat (2020): This is the only model that uses replaceable AAA alkaline batteries.
• Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen): This model features an internal rechargeable battery that uses a USB-C cable for manual charging if the power is too low.
• Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen), Nest Thermostat E, and older: These models utilize a micro-USB cable for charging the display.

If you have a Nest Learning Thermostat (4th or 3rd gen), simply plug the appropriate charging cable into the back of the display for one hour. Once charged, remount the display onto its base. If you have a Nest Thermostat (2020), replace the AAA alkaline batteries with a fresh set.
