Adding additional Nest Wifi Pro routers using wired backhaul

I currently have a Google Nest Wifi Pro mesh system using a total of 5 Pro routers, including the main router (1 main router plus 4 extenders), all using wired backhaul for the mesh network. I would like to add a 6th, or possibly even a 7th, Pro router, also using wired backhaul for the mesh network. I have read that only a total of 5 routers are recommended, otherwise performance declines. My question is, if I'm using wired backhaul for the whole mesh system, would I still run into problems adding additional Pro routers to expand my network coverage?

From the Google Nest Help Center:

Maximum number of Wifi routers or points

We recommend a maximum of 5 Wifi devices in a single network. Adding more might be detrimental to Wi-Fi performance.

I just received this response from a Google Nest Advisor on Google's Help site:

Hi Jacfer,

Thank you for getting in touch today. My name is Dérek. I’m a fellow customer like you, and I’d be happy to help you today with your query.
PS. You can step away if needed and always continue with this chat by clicking on the link that’s been emailed to you.

This recommendation is only for network created via Wifi only.

But in your situation where the router is connected by the cable, then this restriction does not apply.

Yes, you can connect, without problems 😃

Hi Jacfer,

You're right that Google officially recommends a maximum of 5 Nest Wifi Pro routers in a single mesh network, regardless of whether you're using wired backhaul. While wired backhaul generally improves performance and stability compared to wireless backhaul, exceeding the recommended number of routers can still lead to issues.

Here's why adding more than 5 routers, even with wired backhaul, might not be ideal:

Potential Issues:

  • Decreased Performance: Adding more routers increases the network complexity, potentially leading to routing inefficiencies and decreased overall speed and responsiveness.
  • Management Challenges: Managing a larger mesh network can be more complex, requiring frequent troubleshooting and potential configuration adjustments.
  • Interference: With more units, there's a higher chance of interference between them, especially in dense environments.
  • Heat and Power Consumption: More units generate more heat and consume more power, which could be a concern depending on your setup.

Alternatives to Consider:

  • Optimizing Placement: Ensure your existing 5 routers are strategically placed for optimal coverage. Analyze and adjust their positions for better signal distribution.
  • Using Powerline Adapters: If wired backhaul isn't feasible in certain areas, consider using powerline adapters to extend the network using your home's electrical wiring.

While exceeding the recommended number of routers with wired backhaul might not immediately cause major problems, it's not officially supported and comes with potential drawbacks. Carefully consider your specific needs and constraints before deciding to expand your network beyond the recommended 5 devices.

I hope this helps. Also, since you've been in contact with our team (chat or call), do you have a case number that we can review?

Best,

Dan
