Changing the Domain Name/Domain Suffix

timdhuff

I host several services on my home network for my family members. I have been searching for a way to alter the Domain Name/Domain Suffix for my network so it stops using the .lan suffix and instead uses one that I own (e.g. example.com). Is there anyway to do this with the base firmware? If not, any suggestions on realizing this goal (I have an AdGuard Home instance running on a virtual machine that can act as the network DNS if that is the recommended route)?

Hi timdhuff,

Thanks for reaching out. We don't have a way to change the Domain name and suffix for the Google Wifi as of now. We appreciate users who are keen on sharing with us their thoughts. We'll take this as feedback. We're always here if there's anything else you need.

Thanks,

Edward

Hey Jeff,

Sorry for the several day delay, been a bit busy recently.

From what I've gathered from Edward's response, I basically need to change products in order to achieve what I want. The feature doesn't exist at this time and probably won't for several months, years, or ever. In terms of working around it, to the best of my understanding:

  1. You can't turn off or alter the DHCP server that is provided by the device, so I can't set up an external to the Nest Device DHCP server that does allow me to alter the Domain Name/Domain Suffix or change any of the DHCP settings.
  2. Changing the DNS entry to the custom option and pointing it to a DNS server (AdGuard Home) that does have my desired domain name (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here) does not work since
    1. The AdGuard Home Server would need to have manually created entries for every DHCP address issued by the Nest DHCP server, which would mean that host names that are assigned once would need to be reassigned every time their corresponding device's address changes.
    2. Alternatively, I would need to create static entries for every device and assign their IP to a host name in AdGuard Home (which completely defeats the purpose of using DHCP in the first place).

So am I misunderstanding my work arounds, or am I correct that it won't be possible to do this with a Nest device as my Network Router?

Thank you,

Tim
