Connection lost on wifi points after creating guest network

LouKiwi

I have a nest setup with one router and three points,

I have recently had issues with devices insisting on connecting to the router instead of the point even though i was in the same room as the point. It went so far as losing connection completely even though the Google Home app showed no mesh problems and I was close to the point. I was not able to force it to connect to the nearest / strongest wifi mesh point.

Resetting everything and recreating mesh seemed to help but only until I re-added my guest network. As I turned it on all the devices started either connecting to the router itself, or losing connection. Turning off and everything we've back to the suggest mesh point out could see.

Both my phone and Google picture frame showed the same behaviour.

Therefore I can't have a guest network.

What am I missing?

Hey LouKiwi,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet service provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data. You can skip this step if you've done it already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi
