Failed to add new rule. Please check your input and try again - Port Forwarding Disallowed?

Hello Folks -

I'm about ready to ditch my AC1200 setup because of this - I'm setting up a server on my network to host some applications and when I try to define a port forward to a statically addressed host on my LAN, the message I receive is,"Failed to add new rule. Please check your input and try again."

When I try to add a port forward like 21 (FTP) it is allowed and added, but not the custom port (for example 3333) I need to add. Adding less "well-known" ports seems to be disallowed? WTF is google even doing? This is a 1 to 1 port forward - very straightforward addition to my network - but if this router is incapable of any advanced properties, I need to ditch it straightaway. Please advise.

Best,

Rootdude

Hey rootdude,

Are you using IPv4 or IPv6? The process is a little different depending on what you're dealing with. I can see you have some pretty advanced networking knowledge, so we should be able to sort this out.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hey Jeff - only IPv4. My initial thought, was that I was trying to port forward to a host that was statically addressed and not within the DHCP scope, but that didn’t seem to be the problem - just seems like the devices are unwilling to accept TCP/UDP ports that aren’t “well known”. That’s fine for noobs, but insufficient for anything beyond. I’ve already ordered some replacement equipment with proper firewalls, IDP functionality and management, so I don’t want to bend anyone’s brain too much to solve this. The dumbing down of the world seems to be more pervasive day after day. Ayn Rand was an amazing futurist.

Will like to know if there is solution even if the original tread creator doesn’t need the solution I am encountering the same problem I can forward well known ports but not others.

I am in the same boat.  Trying to forward '2222' to an internal devices '22' for ssh access.  It always fails.
