Fios Internet and TV and Google mesh

I have fios internet and tv service and google mesh routers for my wifi and hardwired enet. When I initially set up the google mesh, it was given a 192.168.86.1 lan address to start. I didn't realize that a that time and just added all my other devices to that same .86 subnet. I also realize that I needed to turn off the wifi radios on the fios router because that was on a subnet of 192.168.1.1 and I want only to use the google wifi. Everything works fine with one exception; the five cable tv boxes are on the 192.1668.1.1 subnet so i can't access them with my phone or tablets because they are on the .86 subnet. I hope this is clear so far.

So now I want to get everything on the same network subnet 192.168.1.X so I can control see the cable boxes but I'm not sure what the best way to do it. Do I have do do a factory reset on the google router and start over and let all my devices be discovered again? How do I make sure the google router starts out on the 192.168.1.X subnet? Any help is greatly appreciated.my network configmy network config

Hey @maypo52 .

Google Nest Wifi uses the 192.168.86.x subnet with the exception of the Guest Network that typically uses .84.x. Switching from Verizon equipment to your own is pretty easy and not nearly as complicated as the sketch.

The articles below will assist you with setting up the network. The first two are essentially the same but the second one covers adding a MoCA device (can be ordered off Amazon) so you can restore TV.

Patrick,

Thanks for the info. However, I don't want to eliminate the Verizon router. It is my understanding that in order to keep all functionality of the Verizon cable boxes I.E. On Demand, channel guides etc. that the Verizon router is needed. So I am still looking for a way to have everything in my network on the same subnet.

Hey @maypo52 .

Your Verizon cable boxes and their functionality are dependent on the service you receive externally and not the router itself. It is true that you will have to install a MoCA device to get TV service but that is just translating the signal to something the TV box can use, same as what the Verizon router does but the module is just a separate component added internally. The signal that is coming into the ONT is from Verizon and is what Verizon provisions your service to, not the IP address or subnet on their router. The 192.168.1.x network is the most commonly used for consumer networks on all routers which further confirms the Verizon router isn't doing anything special.

As far as using both routers on the network, it is only going to cause issues and will result in a Double NAT . Both the Verizon router and Google router will be handling the same traffic and trying to manage it. You will also end up with two separate networks (192.168.1.x and 192.168.86.x) which means anything on one network can't connect to the other or devices. And these are just some of the most common issues you'd have. The Verizon router is doing nothing more than a router that has a built in MoCA and mini-switch. By removing it and replacing it per the links I referenced earlier, you are completing the same setup just with the MoCA being an external device.

Verizon has a history of making it difficult to use anything other than their branded equipment. The thing is, all of their equipment is made by the same vendors that make consumer available devices. The exception is that, like other ISPs, they have "custom" builds (i.e. have a MoCA internally) but are nothing special. Verizon will also tell you like other ISPs that you "have" to use their gear so they can have full control and charge for equipment rental. I've been told the same and have always used my own gear; the ONT is the only thing you need that is critical for the service from the ISP.
