Google Nest WiFi Pro model H2D issues with AT&T BGW210-700

Hello,

I've read several forums on this issue, and none seem to come to a clear and complete resolution.

When I first had my nest wifi pro system, I set it up in IP passthrough mode and everything worked fantastically. I was working home during the pandemic with heavy network usage.

For the last few months I've been having throttling issues on the WiFi and extreme throttling and dropped service issues on my work VPN (for example I can't even complete a speed test without a drop). I have 1gb fiber internet and get that speed when hardwired and if I do the "speed test" in the google home app. However a speed test from my computer is only ~150mbps.

So I started from the beginning, factory reset the network and did the following:

1) AT&T BGW210-700 router in bridge mode exactly as described here: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Wifi/CHANGED-SUBJECT-Successfully-set-up-WiFi-Pro-with-A...

- Back to where I was before

2) disabled all firewall settings and packet filtering in AT&T router.

-improved for an evening back down to poor performance in the AM

3) Set my PC as the priority device:

-No change

4)disabled all cloud services in google home app, no device priority

-No change

At this point, the ATT system shouldn't be doing anything and it must all be internal to the nest system. I'm pulling my hair out, since the only way I can work from home is when hardwired directly into the ATT gateway.

I like the built in google home speakers... But seems like the solution is to just get Eero and buy separate speakers.

Thanks!

-Brad

Hello bdmoore2,

Our apologies for the late reply. Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: how many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Abi

Hello Abi,

Thanks for the response. I put in the changes and have been using the system for a few days now.

It certainly improved things. With devices literally a few feet from the main Nest router, I'm now getting 500mbps down/up on one PC (relatively new HP Zbook workstation), 330mps down/ 580mps up on a new surface pro and 300mbps on my phone.

Hardwired into the Nest router, I get 900mps down/up.

Its still very disappointing that I can't get the advertised speed out of WiFi.

Hey bdmoore2,

Thanks for the update. I'll keep the thread open for a few days so you can update us if the speed improves after a while. I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Please let me know if you are still having any concerns or questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Thanks,
Abi

Hello Abigail,

Thanks for leaving the thread open.

My speeds have slowed significantly, down to 130mbps in my living room (great connection on a mesh test). I moved to the office where we have our nest router, disconnected from WiFi, reconnected, and reran. Its up to 360mbps. Which still isn't the speed that I should be getting (900mbps) but is slightly better.

This is still a very frustrating problem. Any suggestions?

-Brad

Hello bdmoore2,

Thanks for the update. Let's try to isolate the issue. Could you connect a computer directly to your Nest Wifi router and do a speed test via https://goo.gle/2QXCbe1? Let me know what the results will show. I'll wait for your update.

Regards,
Abi

Hello Abigail,

As of this AM with no other devices active on my network:

Directly plugged into the nest router 860.2 mbps down 897.80 mbps up

right next to the router on wifi: 377mbps down 579 mbps up

right next to a node with "great connection" in the next room: 180mbps down 141mbps

Thanks!

-Brad
