Google Nest wifi problems with 2 routers and one point

Hi,

I live in a 5-room flat, with a setup of 2 routers and one point (all 2019 version), with a very problematic connection. Normally all have good connection, but quite often (several times a week, sometimes several times a day), the point and sometimes one router simply lose connection, and I have to restart them to regain connection.

The setup is as follows:

  • In the living room I have router 1 cabled to my net providers zyxel router.
  • In room 3 I have router 2. It is not cabled to either router 1 or the zyxel router (pretty impossible due to the flat layout), but have a few non-wifi items connected through a switch.
  • In room 4 I have the wi-fi point 

So room 4 gets its wi-fi connection through router 2 (as far as I know), which again gets its wi-fi connection from router 1. Normally the connection is good (green in the app, good speed), but as said above, they lose connection all-too often.

I would be grateful for any tips for improving this, or anything I can check.

It sounds really frustrating that your Nest WiFi connection drops frequently, requiring you to reset and reconnect devices. Here are some tips that might help improve stability:

 

  • Check for paused devices: when a device, or a group of devices, is paused, it is not going to be connected, or the connection will be restricted for the device.
  • Avoid double NAT; verify that only one router (either your Nest router or your ISP's Zyxel router) is running.
  • Consider changing DNS servers. You can try changing your Nest Wifi's DNS server settings to Google's public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) in the Google Home app. This might sometimes improve internet connectivity.
  • Disconnect the modem from the power source, unplug the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point, remove the power cord from the child point, and leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
