Google wifi - slow(ish)

LogieA
Community Member

Hi,

We have a 600 MGB ISP connection.  When I connect direct to ISP wall box  by ethernet I get close to this speed.  I have four google home wifi's all connected by cat 6.  When connected to the lan ports of any google wifi device  I get close to 600 MGB.  When connected to wifi (in any location) only I can only receive c320 MGB,  even when quite to close to a hub.  There is very little control in the google home app.  Anyone got any ideas or is this as much as I should expect?

Given the Google Wi-Fi specs, this is exactly the sort of performance I'd expect. It's a 2x2 Wi-Fi 5 system unless I'm mistaken? If you want to know why this is, then you'll probably not find much better technical explanation than here

@Slimshaney - sounds like Google support have been wasting both your time and theirs if they're not aware of what the kit they sell is capable of. It can't perform beyond it's physical limitations.

Can't be certain but the Wi-Fi app may test speed from the Internet to the router's WAN interface, which would complete bypass the Wi-Fi network and give you similar results to what you will be able to achieve using an ethernet cable.

Until Wi-Fi 6E and it's sucessors become more commonplace (in both routers and client devices), consistently maintaining > ~500mbps using a Wi-Fi link is a bit of a fallacy IMO. It's not impossible, there's just so many factors that need to line up in your favour and the odds for most consumers are stacked against them.

Yep, (Google Wifi - 1 router, 2 points & 450 Mbps connection)

I've had the same issue for two years now, and have contacted(via email) support so many times, I lost track.
They've had me do everything multiple times. I finally told them that I'm done as they keep just giving me the run around with the same steps and say - nothing else we can do, as they are out of warranty.

I advised support that I'd like to upgrade to Google Nest Wifi and asked if they would honor us with a discount of some sort and that my friends was met with a "sorry, can't help you there either".

Yeah I know, why would I want to upgrade and not look elsewhere - but the fact is, I really like the Google Wifi home network environment - when it's running at 100%.

I bounce my network probably twice a month, and this generally takes care of the speed issue - temporarily.

Our router and points have been kept in perfect condition. Never seen damage and barely sees dust.

I hope this help - prolly not.

Respectfully,
Shane

The weird thing is that the google wifi app reports the same speed as the ISP.  Ethernet ti ISP is fast.  wifi - one metre away is 200 MGB less that I pay for.  Cn't even blame interference or the mesh as my box's are wired and quite a distance apart.  Maybe wifi 6 will fix this ....

Andrew

Yep, when I test from router to modem through the app I receive a full-throttle bandwidth read(even 480 Mbps at times) but that of course is hard-wired straight to the ISP.

I just ran a speed test from my laptop and received 445 Mbps(Wifi).

So it's definitely as @bobpullen mentioned below; There are many factors that need to line up in our favor.

Hi Bob,

Please see my reply above which I tagged you on.

Appreciate the feedback and the technical link you provided. Looks really informative and I'm looking forward to reading through it.

Thank you sir.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.  I am OK knowing this is a limitation, that is why I wired the google home points together. It does appear that google support do not understand the limits of their own kit though.  I see no pint in changing hardware until wifi 6e arrives a a decent price.  Netgear kit is pretty expensive!

Thank you

Andrew

Hey, LogieA.

Sorry that you didn't find the resolution that you were looking for, but it looks like bobpullen was able to provide a good explanation of the situation. Before I mark this as resolved, I wanted to see if there's anything else you might need. If so, just let me know.
