Internet Cutting on and off

honkytonk

Hi there,

My wifi has been cutting in and out for the past few months. If I am at home when it happens, I simply unplug my Nest Router and Router/Modem that it is connected to and once it comes back on the internet is on again. If I am not home, the internet connection sometimes comes on automatically again, but can take hours or days before it comes on again. This is very frustrating when I try to check my nest camera if I am away and then I cannot view it since my internet connection is out. I did reach out to my ISP, and I believe they reset the connection on their end, but I think it is something to do with my Google Nest or Router/Modem that is provided by my ISP since it comes back on with no issue after I turn the power off and back on for them.

Could it be the WAY my Google Nest is connected to my router/modem? I have it connected to an ethernet port on the router/modem, not to the WLAN port. I don't have any of the info that was needed to connect to the WLAN port and initially my connection over the ethernet port was working fine so I thought it was okay. I'm not very experienced with internet connection stuff, so please let me know if you have any better understanding than I do on what is happening here. Thank you so much!

WLAN = Wireless LAN, so you are probably talking about the WAN port. 🙂

It might be related to how it's connected and set up with your modem, or modem/router combo. If you haven't put the modem in front of Nest Wifi in bridge mode, you might have double NAT, which could cause problems like this. More info:

What exact modem make and model do you have?

What WAN IP address does Nest Wifi report that it has in the Google Home app? A typical WAN IP, or a typical LAN IP like 192.168.x.y, 10.0.x.y, 172.16.x.y (also known as "private network" or "RFC 1918" addresses).

  • Google Home app -> Wi-Fi (icon) -> Settings (icon) -> Advanced networking -> WAN.

If the latter (WAN IP = private network address), it is a indication that you have double NAT, which should be avoided if possible.

I don't work for Google.
