Internet Speed Drops to 90Mbit After ~24hrs

GPLama
Community Member

I have a 1000/50 fiber service that works as expected (~900/47 on a good day) that will drop to 90Mbit downlink after around 24 hours from power-up. It will remain at 90Mbit until I power cycle the Google Nest Router at which time the downlink speeds return to the expected speeds.

I've done a number of things in an attempt to troubleshoot this... I've changed Internet providers, cabling, etc. The fact that the Nest Router works as expected for around 24hrs before lowering the speed and that I can resolve this with a reboot of the device has me finally seeking answers from Google support on this one... (I had assumed it was rate-limiting at the ISP... it's not).

The speed tests to determine this issue are being done with both the Google Home app and loading Fast .com on directly connected devices.

Device info: Model: H2D. Software Version: 14150.376.32

Ideas/suggestions appreciated!

Hey GPLama,

Thanks for posting. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having this issue.

I understand that you’ve done several troubleshooting steps like power cycling, changing Internet service providers, checking cables and more. Could you list any other troubleshooting steps that you’ve done? I’d like to make sure everything is exhausted before we move on to the next step.

We’ll wait for your update.

Best,
Abi

Thanks for the reply Abi. I've outlined everything I've done to date. I've resorted to rebooting the Nest router every 24hrs or so as a work-around.

Hello everyone,

I just want to give you a nudge. How is it going? Do you still need help? I want to make sure your Google Nest Wifi devices are already working as they should. Kindly reply to this thread if you still need help.

Kind regards,
Lovely

I've implemented all the troubleshooting suggestions as outlined by AbigailF and have again encountered the issue with the downlink being restricted to ~90Mbit/s. Uplink remains unaffected. Soft resets using "Restart Network" from within the Google Home app did not resolve the issue. I did a connection kick and port reset from the ISP forcing the connection to reauthenticate, issue still persisted. The resolution again was a hard reset by powering off the Google Wifi router and powering it back on again. My downlink has returned to 700Mbit+.

I’ve had this same issue for around eight months now. Model AC-1304, version 14150.376.32.

I don’t see any options that might help, and my ISP is of no use. I’m just in the habit of restarting the device every day, which is not what I would expect from a Google product.

Hi folks,

Appreciate the update. Apologies for the late reply. Please try the troubleshooting steps below:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

Let us know how it goes. We’ll wait for your feedback.

Best,
Abi

Someone in another thread suggested disabling Video Conferencing under Preferred Activities in settings. This worked for me. My speed did not drop all week. I don’t know how this feature is supposed to work, but it seems to cause major issues.

Interesting! I've just switched that off and done a power cycle. 800Mbit+ downlink with a speed test. I'll monitor this for a few days.

Hey everyone,

Just checking in. Have you monitored your network speed a few days after disabling options in Preferred Activities? How was it? We'd like to make sure everything is all set.
Thanks for helping out, @LovelyM.

Cheers,
Abi

Disabling Preferred Activities solved the my issue. There is obviously a bug in the implementation.

Hello folks,

It looks like we've slowed down here. We'll be closing up the thread in the next day unless anyone else has any input or needs anything else. If so, just let me know and we can keep this open a bit longer.

Thanks,
Lovely

Since switching off the 'Preferred Activities' feature my Google Nest router has not encountered this speed cap issue for the last six days. This is a huge improvement over the ~24hr cycle or so it would limit the connection to 90Mbit/s. I'm still not entirely confident this is the solution, but it is the best performing 'fix' I've attempted to date.

Thanks for the follow-up. I've just performed another test and the Internet downlink speed is as expected. This is now nine days since switching off the 'Preferred Activities' feature my Google Nest router. I suspect this may be the resolution.
