Laptop Vs Wifi

WifiConfused

Hi Folks,

Each time I connect my laptop to my network it drops the connection. I can restart the connection and it connects, without drop outs.

But, come the next day, process begins again. Connect laptop, restart network, continue with the day.

Any suggestions?

Hi WifiConfused,

Thanks for posting. I'm sorry that you are having some problems with the Wi-Fi connection of your laptop that is disconnecting, and it just connects if you restart the network. I understand how concerning this can be. But don't worry, I'm here to help! I just need to ask for some information to provide the best solution:

  • What Google Nest Wi-Fi device do you have? You can check the "What Google Nest Wifi device do I have?" article to find out.
  • Do you use a modem and router combo?
  • Is your laptop the only device that has this problem?
  • Do you use the same network name and password as your previous network?
  • Has the device ever been able to connect?
  • Could you also provide the make and model of your laptop?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I am using the Nest Wifi (6E) Pro System, 1 router with 2 nest.

I have an NBN modem, into a Router. This then runs into a 8 port switch. The Google Router is on the 2nd story plugged into a port which bypasses the switch.

No not just my laptop, it is a range of laptops that have this problem. Network name and password have not changed. Yes the device will connect, however, randomly throughout the day the system will drop the internet connection and need to be restarted.

It is a range of laptops which have this issue. Each time I connect the laptop for the first time that day the wifi loses internet connection. I have tested all lines and made sure there is connectivity at all points. Not sure if it is the Nest System itself and something has gone wrong with it.

Hi WifiConfused,

Thanks for your reply and the information provided. It seems that the situation may be related to a Double NAT because you mentioned having an NBN modem that goes into a router, and then your Nest Wifi Pro router is connected to a port that bypasses the switch. This setup could potentially be creating a "Double NAT" scenario. It occurs when you have two devices in your network both performing NAT. This can lead to conflicts, connectivity issues, and unpredictable behavior like the intermittent drops you're experiencing.

First of all, please make sure that you are following the recommended order to use a switch with your Google Nest Wifi devices: Modem → Wifi router→ Switch → Point(s).

Switches and points can be connected in any order, as long as they're downstream of the Wifi router.

Also here are some steps to try to remove the Double NAT:

  1. Give the Google Wifi network a different name.
  2. Remove the Internet Service Provider (ISP)-provided router from the network.

Please let me know if you have any questions during the process.

Best regards,

Jenny
