Massive Wifi Speeds reduction with mesh system (90% speed reduction)

chrisparkes

I have fast internet speeds of 400mps which I measure on my google wifi router gen 2 with 2 points.  My unit is one floor 1,800sqft with a "great connection" when testing the mesh. I've run tests on wifi on multiple devices (phone, computer, iPad) at various locations around the house. I consistently only get 12-40mps on most of my devices.

I have 26-30 devices connected to my system most of the time, including a NAS device which is wired in.

I've tried restarting the network, modem, unplugging and let sit for a few minutes. I've also tried all these options below from AbigailF except for the factory resetting portion which I'm looking to try as a last resort when I can find time to reset all my devices.

What else can you recommend to help address the massive speed loss. I recently upgraded my internet speed from my ISP from 75mps to 400mps 3 days ago and this only somewhat improved my speed on all my devices. The issue looks to be the google wifi mesh system from what I can tell. Please help

Just an update to the thread here. I've done a factory reset this morning with the whole wifi system and I'm still getting only 30 mbps, 18 mbps and 25 mps on multiple devices at different locations around the house going through different points and the router wifi signal. Devices I tested this on was desktop, phone, ipad and laptops.

I have been testing the speed of my system by unplugging all my points and google speakers and testing in the same room next to my router. I get various speed results from (ookla, google, xfinity, netflix, speedof.me) and they all give a wide range of speeds. Now I'm stumped.  The overall speed of the system goes down when I reconnect all of my devices (2 points, 3 google speakers) throughout my home.  Here's the data after testing in the same room.

[only router plugged in / all points + speakers plugged in]
Google speed test: [307mps / 165mps]
fast.com: [ 120 / 110]
xfinity: [ 70 / 94 ]
speedof.me: [ 35 / 14 ]

The router connects to both points by going through 3 walls. My router is within a few inches of my modem, and both sit on a metal frame utility storage with wood shelves. I took the router outside the room into an open room and tested the speed as well with little benefit in change.

I've been out of town all week, I will be testing the suggestions this weekend.

Please perform the following workarounds.

  • Factory reset the Google Nest WiFi router that you've set up as the primary router. Once the Google Nest WiFi router is already under pulsing white, without setting it up (while it is under pulsing white) connect it directly to the modem.
  • It's best if you have a hardwired computer that can be plugged into the Google Nest WiFi to perform a speed test. If there is none, then just connect wirelessly to the setup network name and perform a speed test.
  • If the speed test result is within 80% of the speed you are paying your ISP, proceed in setting it up as a primary router on a separate new network with a different WiFi name and password.
  • Once it is online, connect all your devices to the WiFi of the new separate network and perform another speed test.
  • If the result of the speed test is slow, disconnect all devices to your WiFi and perform the speed test again. If the speed test is fast, it means that you have a device that when connected to your WiFi slows down your speed.
  • If the result is fast on the other hand, you can make this new network your main WiFi and remove your old network through the Home app and  simply add the additional access points.
