Mesh points have bad reception all of the sudden

zamboknee

My speed coming into the router is great but sometimes my mesh points have all the sudden started having a 'weak connection.'

This access points have been in the same locations for a couple years now with nary an issue.

What's all of the sudden causing these weak connections?

I haven't added anything new to the household like a wifi-intensive device or an RF blasting device.

Hi zamboknee,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I'm so sorry to hear that suddenly your mesh points are having bad reception. No worries; I'm here to help! Just to get started, I'd like to confirm some information with you. Can you please help me answer the next questions?

  • What model is your Google Nest WiFi device (Nest WiFi Pro, Nest WiFi, or Google WiFi)?
  • How many mesh points do you have, and how far apart are they?
  • Are there any devices that might interfere with the connection, such as microwaves, baby monitors, or Bluetooth devices?
  • What are the download and upload speeds of your mesh connection?

In the meantime, if you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further!

Best regards,

Nery.

  • Nest Wifi is H2D
  • 3 access points (2 H2E, 1 H2D)
  • No devices that have been added that might interfere.
  • I did a system speed test (from ISP to router) and it's about 800mbps (download) and 62mbps (upload).

Nothing has changed in my network. Basically, I'm getting more frequent 'weak connection' when it comes to my mesh points.

Thank you.

Hi zamboknee,

Thanks for getting back to me and for sharing all this useful information!

Let's try some troubleshooting steps together:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap on the Wi-Fi space.
  3. Select Network Settings, then Advanced Networking.
  4. Find cloud services and Wi-Fi usage. Toggle them off, then back on.
  5. Forcefully close the Google Home app.
  6. Reopen the app and test the mesh connection again.

Note that sometimes you need to move a different point that’s not "Weak" in order to improve the weak Google Wifi or Nest Wifi point’s performance.

I hope this helps. If you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further!

Best regards,

Nery.

Hello zamboknee,

Thanks for your reply.

I want to know if the LED status light changes color when the points start showing a weak connection.

Are your points wired to the router or communicating wirelessly with each other? It would be great if you could get a brand new CAT6 Ethernet cable to wire a point to the router. Then, please test the mesh connection by:

  • Opening the Google Home app
  • Tapping on your Wi-Fi network
  • Selecting the Wi-Fi points
  • Selecting Test mesh

If the mesh connection improves and weak connections stop after a while, you might need to change your point placement.

Let me know what you find out.

Regards,
Angel.

LEDs don't change color at all when connection is weak.

My points are wirelessly connected to router. Not sure how you COULD wire them to it as there's not ethernet port on the access points.

I moved an access point and it seemed to help for a couple days but we're now back to having issues.

Restarted entire network and things got better...for now.
