Nest WiFi Pro slower speed vs Nest WiFi (2nd gen)

Hi there,

I recently upgraded from Nest Wifi (2nd gen) to Nest Wifi Pro to take full advantage of my new 1000/50 Mbps internet plan. However, I'm not seeing the performance I expected. With my old setup, I was regularly getting speeds over 900 Mbps when running speed tests through the Google Home app. With the Nest Wifi Pro, I can't seem to get past 615 Mbps.

I've tried everything I can think of... resetting the router and access points, disconnecting the mesh and using only the main router, swapping out Ethernet cables but nothing has improved the speed. I'm honestly at my wits’ end and seriously considering returning the device. Before I do, I wanted to reach out here and see if anyone else has experienced similar issues or might have any suggestions.

Thanks

Likewise.

Previously attempted all of the above.

I have a 2000/300 Mbps plan and have my modem set to bridge mode and I am lucky to get ~800/~250 Mbps.

Seems as though the Router is throttling the speed it receives for some reason.

Could it be firmware and/or some advance settings in the router? (For Google Tech Team)

Your speed of  ~800/~250 Mbps sounds about right as the router comes with 2x ethernet ports that support 1000 Mbps wired speeds. If you want to leverage full speed of your internet connection I'd look at eero Pro 6E which features a 2.5 Gbps (2500 Mbps) ethernet port for faster wired connection.

Hi!

I have the same on a slightly lower scale. I own the nest wifi pro and use a 500mbps fiber contract. I only get close to 96mbps. Today I talke to my service provider and after some back and forth they say that my router only "asks" for 100mbps. I use cat7 and cat10 Ethernet cables to that should not be the bottleneck. Any idea how I can "unlock" my nest wifi pro to give me all the speed?

Thanks all!

Definitely an odd situation.

So I did some more digging last night and here’s what I found...

  1. I connected the third router to the mesh setup, but it didn’t make any noticeable difference.
  2. Running a speed test in the Google Home app still shows a max of around 615 Mbps (and sometimes even less). Today, I changed the DNS settings — first from Google to Custom, then to ISP. The speed briefly jumped to nearly 700 Mbps, but it didn’t last long and dropped back down (currently sitting at 606 Mbps).
  3. Now here’s where it gets interesting. Occasionally, when I run a wireless speed test on my iPhone using the Ookla Speedtest app, I get close to 1000 Mbps download (Google app still shows the same speed below 650 Mbps). Most of the time though, speeds don’t exceed 450–500 Mbps.
  4. However, while running the test, if I walk up really close to the main router (within 10 cm), the speed shoots up above 900 Mbps. But as soon as I move just a meter away, it drops by about half.
  5. The second router is about 5 meters away from where I usually test (with just a gyprock wall in between), but even when I’m standing right next to it, the speed doesn’t go above 500 Mbps.
  6. For comparison, my brother-in-law uses the same ISP and speed tier. He’s got an eero 6+ router in the garage, and when I run the Ookla test on my phone there and that's from 15 meters away, I consistently get over 900 Mbps. This would point to some malfunction with the Google Nest WiFi Pro product or it's low quality firmware.

Hi there,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing slow internet on your Google Nest Wifi Pro devices. I'd be happy to help.

Based on the information provided, and since you mentioned you're getting different speeds when moving closer to the main router and the points, please provide the information requested below:

  • Do you use a modem and router combo, or just a modem?
  • Do you use the same network name and password as your previous network?
  • Are you experiencing the same issue with all your devices or just with some specific devices?
  • How many devices actively use the internet at once?
  • Are your Google Nest Wifi Pro devices the only ones connected directly to the modem?
  • Is there a switch located on the network?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Anders

Hey there,

I returned it last week and went back to my old Google Nest (gen2) setup. The connection quality is back to normal, though I'm not leveraging my full internet speed over WiFi (thinking investing in eero 6+ or 6E in the near future).

To answer your questions:

  • Do you use a modem and router combo, or just a modem?
    • Nest router connected to NTU
  • Do you use the same network name and password as your previous network?
    • yes
  • Are you experiencing the same issue with all your devices or just with some specific devices?
    • all
  • How many devices actively use the internet at once?
    • 3-5
  • Are your Google Nest Wifi Pro devices the only ones connected directly to the modem?
    • yes
  • Is there a switch located on the network?
    • no

Hi @macid,

Thank you for replying and for the information provided.

Since you mentioned having an improvement when moving closer to the main router, I recommend you try placing your points closer to the router, as there shouldn't be more than two rooms between your router and points.

In the article Where to place your Wifi devices you will find some tips to place your points and to improve coverage for an existing network.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Anders
