Nest Wifi router - 300Mbps in, 50 out

We've had a Nest mesh household set up for years with no issues. In the past few days, our devices have been having spotty connections. A test of the router shows that it is getting 300 Mbps in, as it should be. But an Android phone sitting 12" away shows ~50 Mbps.  Our Nest point, which has never had any problems, now shows a weak connection.  We've rebooted several times, to no avail. Anything else we can try? Is it old age and we need to replace the router?  Thanks!

Hey elora_c,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes. You may skip this step if you’ve done it already.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data. You may use the same network name and password so that your devices reconnect automatically.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

It is still unreliable. We even tried with a new Nest WIFI router.  The router consistently is at 300 Mbps in.  But devices connected to it will have speeds varying from 15 Mbps to ~200.  The 200 is what I'd expect. 15 Mbps, when the device is 1 foot away from the router indicates something is wrong.  When testing the mesh connection, sometimes it'll be a good connection, sometimes weak. Nothing physically changes, and device usage at the time of the tests is the same.
