Nest Wifi router cannot connect to internet when it was directly connected to the modem

I was using this router okay with current modem till the day before daylight saving start in this year (2024).

After the daylight saving started, this router suddenly showed yellow light blinking and saying no internet is connected. Here are the things what I tried.

1. Changed the ethernet cable - yellow blink

2. Changed the port where I connected on the modem - yellow blink

3. Tried with another Nest wifi router on the same port of the modem and cable - working okay - it means modem and cable has no problem.

I am using two separate Nest Wifi router mesh networks in my house due to the IoTs. The problematic router is connected to most of the IoTs so that I had to solve the issues. *let's say problematic one is Nest Wifi router 1 and the working one as Nest Wifi router 2.

One of the funky trial was working - I hooked up the router 1 to the router 2 and router 2 is directly connected to the modem. And then, router 1 started to get the internet. When I hooked it up to the modem again, it cannot detect the internet. WTF, right? As an emergency solution, I was using it in this way, but the load to the router 2 was too heavy so that I needed to find other solution. My last trial was factory resetting the router 1, and it said no internet detected with direct connection to the modem.

Please let me know if anyone has any other solution. Current router 1 condition looks alike that it only takes "Google nest feeding internet" only. What a stupid.

Hi @SJA78,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Nest WiFi router isn't able to connect to the modem. I'd be happy to help!

To better assist you, I'd like to ask a couple of questions:

  • Do you have two Nest WiFi routers or one router and one point?
  • What are the models of both Nest WiFi routers you have, or would you mind sharing a photo of both devices?

It sounds like you tried connecting one Nest WiFi router directly to another. In this configuration, a Nest WiFi router functions just as a router when connected directly to your modem, not as a point. This is why two Nest WiFi routers cannot connect to the same modem.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Here the answer for your question.

I have two WIFI routers. One router is established with 3 mesh points, and the other router is established with 2 mesh points.

I think I said that it is Nest Wifi router, which is the product name of the google store. This is not the Google Wifi (the 1st generation with round pillar shape). As I know, this is the 2nd generation, which start to separate the router and mesh points. It is the pod shape.

And, I would like to clarify your thought before.

This is another trial I have done.

I have removed all the connected routers from the modem and connected one each by each as only one connection to the modem.

The troublesome router was not working at all when I only connected it by itself to the modem. Just showing orange color light slow blinking, which means no internet.

The other one is working fine.

Therefore, I think it would be the answer for you that if the Internet Provider made any restrictions for the number of routers to be connected to the modem.

This troublesome router only detects the internet through the other router. It is just creepy and funky and thank you for making me laugh at this product.

Hi again, @SJA78,

Thanks for following up! I understand the frustration of not being able to connect both routers to your modem. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Unfortunately, at this time, Nest WiFi can only connect to a single modem. It can function as either a router or an access point, but it's limited to one modem connection. Additionally, Nest WiFi supports up to three points. We recommend a maximum of five WiFi points on a single network to avoid impacting performance. Here's a helpful article about how many points you can add.

I understand this is a helpful feature, and we all hope to be available as soon as possible. In the meantime, your feedback is valuable and helps us improve our products to better meet your needs.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

It seems like you don't understand what I said at all.

I never said that both of the router are working when I connect only one router to the modem.

I said the troublesome router was not working even when it was connected to the modem as itself without any other router. Do you understand what I just said above?

I connected this troublesome router only on the modem. JUST ONE ROUTER ON THE MODEM!!

BUT  NOT WORKING!!!!!

Okay? What makes me frustrated is not this router but you who do neither understand nor try to understand.

I fully understand from your comments and attitude that you and Google Nest have no idea about this glitch and have no intend to fix it.

I won't comment here anymore and just leave a review on all other media for the possible bad consequence of their Google Nest router and mesh system.

You know what? I used this mesh system for 4 years with two router system on one modem. It made troubles from this year. Additionally, not only the router but also several mesh points were ignored by the router in these days and showing that "kind of lifetime" is ending soon. What a pity.

More pity is I have established all my home security based on Nest system and product so that I need to buy new Google Nest Wifi pro to fix this issue. That makes me real sad.
