Nest throttling devises?

normdouglas
Community Member

I know this has been spoken about lots. I can confirm that my nest mesh wifi device works a treat yet it is clearly throttling my devices to avoid a maximum of 50mbs. The moment I “prioritise “ a device it starts connection at about 400mbs (a wired device gets almost 1gb on my network).
therefore this is clearly a case of “by design” by Google engineers.
My simple question is… why?

Please give a highly technical and detailed response. Not a dumbed down answer.

Thank you.

Hello @normdouglas

This is a user community. Some users have learned a lot about some aspects of these products, but there are still many aspects that are not understood outside of the Google engineering teams. There are several aspects I can explain in fairly excruciating detail, for example. But, unfortunately, this behavior is not one of them. All I can say is that I have seen other reports of this behavior, so you're not alone. I also believe the Google engineering team is aware of it (but, they aren't likely to monitor this forum or respond in a satisfactory way).

Hi folks,

@MichaelP, thanks for the help!

@normdouglas, how's it going with your Google Wifi? Still need our help?

Thanks,

Edward

Not sure what you can do short of modifying the software to allow users to disable the obvious throttling.

Hi, everyone.
Just one quick final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let me know.
Thanks.

Thanks I think that this is probably a bot but no assistance was offered because none can. The product throttles potential speeds… simple. This is by design from the manufacturer

Hey, normdouglas.

Google and Nest WiFi don't throttle speeds by design. At times speeds to specific devices can fluctuate and differ based on the needs of the network, but the dramatic speed drops you're seeing are not at all intended. Can you give me a few more details about your setup? Are you using IPv6? Does it ever run at full speed when you don't have any prioritized devices? Do you have any preferred activities set up in Google Home?

There's nothing in the design of the product that would make the speeds you're seeing be considered normal, so looking into this deeper should provide some answers.

Thanks.

Hey, everyone.
It looks like we've slowed down here again. We'll be closing up the thread unless anyone else has any input or needs anything else. If so, just let me know and we can keep this open a bit longer.
Thanks.
