Nest wifi pro slows down and devices disconnects, needs a restart of nest wifi pro to work

Uberweiss

I am having huge issue with our nest wifi, which drops the wifi speed to 10 Mbps and we have a 1000Mpbs fiber connection.

at the same time I see devices being disconnected from the wifi (or saying no internet is available) - after a restart off our nest wifi It works fine again for 24-48 hours.

in our troubleshooting process, I have changed all cables, done tests with our ISP and everything seems to be working fine.

I've been having the same issue, except my Internet connection is only FTTC and is only 36 Mbps.

When the slowdowns happen, things struggle to load however the Home App still lets me test the network which shows as everything normal.

Hi folks,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have, and we apologize for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? What device are you using to set up your network (iOS or Android)? Do you have the Internet on your modem? What's the topology of your devices?

You can do a sequential reboot of your entire network and see if that helps, or please perform a 2-minute power cycle on your entire network to re-establish the connection on your connected devices. Here's how:

  1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the child points.
  4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
  5. Connect the power cord to the modem then to your router and points.

Also, you can give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6:
    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
    2. Tap the Wi-Fi coin  and then Settings.
    3. Scroll down and tap Advanced networking.
    4. Scroll down to IPv6.
    5. Toggle the switch off Toggle button off.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

You may skip any step that you’ve done already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dan

Dear Dan.

Thank you for your response.

unfortunately factory reset didn't help - i have tried that already 🙂

IPv6 has already been turned off.

Model/router is set to bridge mode.

i will change the DNS settings and try the sequential boot. and see if that fixes the issue.

I use an Openreach FTTC aka VDSL modem which my Nest Wifi Pro connects directly to. The connection is set to PPPoE for authentication and I am using Google's DNS.

Sequential rebooting made no difference.

I have tried disabling and re-enabling IPv6 but this made no difference.

I did however disable Video conferencing in the preferred activities and Ironically, video conferencing works better with this turned off.

Hello there,

Uberweiss, much appreciated. Have you had the chance to reboot your Nest devices? How about changing its DNS settings? Keep us posted.

carguy143, thank you for taking the time to do the provided steps. For confirmation, is video conferencing much better when the IPv6 is off? How about speed results?

Kind regards,

Dan

did the changes yesterday - was planning to revert back as soon as i have had the settings on for a bit of time.

but so far, it seems stable..

just wanted to give an update.

it seems to have fixed the issue from my side- it has been running stabile for the last two weeks.

Hi Dan,

Sorry just seen this now.

I left IPv6 on however disabling the video conferencing preferred activity has massively improved my network for everything, including video conferencing.

I have not had a slowdown since.

Hello,

I am having this exact same issue where my wifi speed drops to 10 Mbps within 24-48 hrs, I have a 1000Mpbs fiber connection.

I have:

1. Changed all Cables

2. Enabled IPV6

3. Set DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4

4. Disabled Video Conferencing.

However the issue persists?

Any advice is appreciated?

Thanks,

Mike.

Dans suggestion helped me

This maybe an amateur mistake but I am going to mention it anyway in case it helps someone else.

I was using an Android device to test my Wifi using fast.com.

It seems the device was reverting to the Mobile data network after 24-48 hours, this was likely have been happening when I left the house for a period of time and lost access to the nest WiFi network.

Even after returning within range of the nest WiFi the mobile data network remained as the primary network, that is why I was seeing the low speeds of 10 Mbps on the tests.

I enabled "Intelligent Wifi" on the android device and so far the device has been rejoining the nest WiFi network and the speeds are consistent.

Hopefully this may help someone else, and save them some time in the future.

Hello there,

carguy143, that's an interesting observation! Thanks for sharing it here for other Community members to see. It's great to hear that it worked for you!

Uberweiss, thank you for doing the steps provided above, and we appreciate the confirmation that the steps worked. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or need help with anything else!

miccidymac, you're absolutely right! Sharing your experience with "Intelligent Wifi" on Android as a solution to rejoining the Nest Wifi network after mobile data takeover is valuable information for others facing similar issues. Many people don't realize how mobile data can automatically take over and disrupt a consistent connection, especially after short outages or when roaming in and out of range.

  • Mobile data fallback can be sneaky: It's easy to overlook and can lead to frustration while troubleshooting slow internet speeds.
  • Intelligent Wifi: By enabling this feature, you encourage your Android device to prioritize and automatically switch back to the stronger Nest Wifi connection when in range, ensuring consistent performance.
  • Saving time and frustration: Sharing your solution helps others troubleshoot similar issues quickly and avoid unnecessary headaches.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! It could potentially save someone else valuable time and effort in dealing with frustrating connectivity issues.

If you have any further observations or insights related to using Nest Wifi with Android devices, feel free to share them. Your contributions are appreciated by the community!

Cheers,

Dan
