Since the Google Nest Wifi Mesh (router plus 3 access points to cover house and back yard) is a very poor mesh network with slow speeds, we are considering changing it out. I have been hesitant since I like the way the Google Nest Wifi integrates with the Google Home app, allows me to manage it, manage the devices on the network, and manage kid internet time. We are a very Google heavy home with cameras, door lock, door bell, speakers, protect, secure, hubs, and other smart devices so I have been hesitant to mess it up but the continuous poor performance of the wifi speeds making me consider trying it to see if I see improved wifi around the house. We have a 1 gig ATT gateway that consistently tests at 900+ down and 800+ up but the Nest router consistently test at 500ish down and 121 up. I have talked to Google support and they are no help and there is several community posts about this with no solution so either they can't fix their system or just refuse to. (yes, I have tried all the suggestions from the community groups of changing DNS, passthrough, changing out the cable, etc.)
If we get another brand router, will it integrate with the Google Home app like the Nest Wifi does or will I just need to manage the new router through their app and the wifi part of Google Home will not be functional? Thanks.

Hello @carlk
Google WiFi, Nest WiFi, and Nest WiFi Pro are the only WiFi/router products that can be managed from within the Google Home app today.

darn. I do like managing the router in the same app with the other devices....I just wish that google would get their act together on their hardware. I am not sure why this has been such a challenge but clearly something is wrong because so many people are reporting the same problem. Our son got the 2 gig google fiber into his apartment but could not get speeds above 1 gig on the google router/gateway so changed his service to 1 gig.

Hello @carlk
Well, there are certainly some people who have issues with these products. But, you won't typically hear from the people who aren't having issues. For them, it just works. I've been using Google WiFi since it first came out, and it's been very reliable for me, for example.
In any case, the main reason for my post was to mention that the Ethernet ports on Google & Nest WiFi products are all 1Gbps ports, not 2.5Gbps or 10Gbps. So, it's not a surprise your son was unable to get more than 1Gbps.

For our Nest router, it consistently shows 500ish down and 121 up (always 121 up so that is odd also) for the Google Home speed test but when I check my gateway, it is almost a gig (testing both via the ATT app and directly connecting to a PC) plus the access points tend to fluctuate on connection quality so I have to unplug and plug in again and then they are good for a while. The other night I tested my phone speeds and they were in double digits and I was in the same room as the router. For my son, a Google technician set up the Google Fiber connection and the router/gateway combo unit that they use and it is supposed to handle the 2 Gbps speed. What would be the point in selling a 2 Gbps speed and then providing a router/gateway that couldn't handle that speed? The technician who went to his place, multiple times, couldn't figure out why it wasn't getting the speed so he just change the plan to 1 Gbps.

I can't help with Google Fiber, but I do know they don't use Google WiFi or Nest WiFi for their routers (at least not in new installations). The routers they use are made by another company entirely, and at least some of them should support speeds higher than 1Gbps.

yes, it is a gateway/router combo like our ATT.

Well, I solved my problem. I removed the Nest router and replaced it with a ROG Rapture GT6 and now getting the speeds, across the house, that I have paid for, for years. Almost one Gbps everywhere. It isn't integrated like the google wifi but is a much nicer app to manage the wifi network.
