I've been trying to find the root cause of an issue with my Google WiFi, which has a few people stumped. When my Windows PC is configured to use 5Ghz or dual band, it is slower than over 2.4Ghz. This most obviously impacts connecting to Steam.
Things I've tried:
- reset the network and OC
- drivers and software is up to date
- followed articles where others have had Steam connectivity around releasing and renewing the IP
The reason I believe this is a problem with Nest is when connecting to the modem/router over wifi this issue is also resolved but when immediately reconnecting to Nest over 5Ghz, the problem reappears. I would try changing channels on Nest if that was possible but it isn't. Any ideas?

Hi @Trutch,
Thank you for reaching out to the community. I’m sorry to hear that you’re getting poor performance over your 5Ghz on your Windows PC; let me help you with this.
I would like to ask you some questions to gather more information about this situation and look for a solution:
In the meantime, please let's try the following troubleshooting steps to help increase the performance.

Hi Trutch,
Thanks for following up!
I'm sorry to hear that you’re still getting poor performance over the 5GHz on your Windows PC. Let’s try to fix this.
To continue investigating the situation, I’d like to ask the following:
Since you've mentioned disabling wireless on your Netgear Nighthawk D7000, I'd like to double-check: Did you enable Bridge Mode? If so, let's try resetting your Nest WiFi router to factory defaults and rebooting your primary modem/router. Then, set up the Nest WiFi router again through the Google Home app.
For reference, you can check out these articles: Factory reset your WiFi device and Set up Google Nest WiFi.
Please keep me updated.
Best regards,
Jenniffer

Hi Jenniffer,
Thanks for the continued help. Bridge mode was enabled automatically on the device, with no option to disable this. Regarding other devices, I'm not seeing anything as serious as I do with my Windows PC. Other issues are intermittent, which could easily be explained by other things.
I'll try factory resetting but I'll need to find a bit more time to action that.
Thanks

Hi @jenniffert,
Unfortunately, factory resetting the device did not resolve the issue. However, I may have resolved the issue another way. Setting the DNS addresses manually on the Windows device itself seems to have fixed the issue.
Now, any combination of setting the DNS on the Nest and PC to automatic or Google DNS now seems to work. I'm not sure how this relates to only the 5Ghz network. I'll continue to monitor the situation and report back if the issue arises again.
Thank,
Matt
