Printer is not discoverable by devices connected to LAN port

Printer is connected via WiFi and works fine with other WiFi devices on the network.

I have an unmanaged switch hooked up to one of the APs on the mesh, which I have my computer connected to, which cannot discover the printer.

Is there some sort of firewall which is interfering?

Cheers

Hi Jonathan,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have, and we apologize for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet service provider (ISP)? Which Google/Nest router are we working with? What device are you using to set up your network (iOS or Android)? Do you have the Internet on your modem?

To start with, the unmanaged switch could be introducing a network segmentation issue that prevents your computer from discovering the printer on the Google Wifi mesh network. Here's why and what you can try:

Understanding Network Segmentation:

  • An unmanaged switch simply forwards data packets it receives on one port to all other connected ports. While it expands the number of wired connections, it doesn't create separate network segments.
  • In your case, the unmanaged switch might be isolating your computer's network traffic from the rest of the Google Wifi mesh network, essentially creating two separate subnets. This can prevent devices on different subnets from discovering each other.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Direct Connection Test:
    • Temporarily connect your computer directly to one of the Google Wifi access points (APs) using an Ethernet cable, bypassing the unmanaged switch.
    • If you can then discover the printer, it confirms the switch is causing the issue.
  • Alternative Solutions:
    • Move Printer to Mesh Network: If feasible, consider connecting the printer directly to one of the Google Wifi APs using Wi-Fi instead of relying on the unmanaged switch.
    • Managed Switch: If you need more wired connections, consider replacing the unmanaged switch with a managed switch. Managed switches allow for more granular control over network traffic and can be configured to create separate VLANs (Virtual LANs) if needed. However, managed switches are typically more complex to configure.

Additional Tips:

  • Power Cycle Devices: Sometimes, a simple power cycle of your Google Wifi mesh system, unmanaged switch, and printer can resolve temporary network glitches.
  • Check Firewall Rules: While less likely in your case, ensure your computer's firewall isn't blocking communication with the printer.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan
