SHARP MICROWAVE SMD2499FS - REQUIRES 2.4 GHZ

HI,

Has anyone successfully connected a SHARP MICROWAVE SMD2499FS to a Google Nest Wifi Mesh Network. Sharp requires a 2.4 GHz signal to connect. I have an iPhone X and can not find a way to get the two devices to connect. 

Can I get the Google Mesh Wifi to temporily only be 2.4 GHZ for set up? Help.

If the microwave only uses 2.4ghz, then it should just connect, as the Nest wifi is broadcasting both 2.4 and 5ghz using the same SSID.  The microwave should see the 2.4 and connect to it.  If it won't you might have another problem. 

How do you connect the microwave to wifi, using an app?  Is it not detecting a wifi signal to connect to at all? Do you have WPA3 security turned on in wifi and the microwave doesn't support it maybe?

You could download a Wifi Analyzer app on your iPhone and it will show you the 2.4ghz channel Nest is using.  Perhaps you could set up the guest network on the nest wifi and see if the microwave will connect to that as a workaround?

Some (but not all) 2.4GHz devices are configured by smart phone apps where the assumption is that the phone would be connected to 2.4GHz WiFi during setup so it can tell the device which BSSID and perhaps even which channel to connect to. When the phone is actually connected to the 5GHz band, the BSSID and channel won't be useful to a 2.4GHz-only device, and setup fails. Devices like this are deeply flawed (in my opinion) as home networks continue to adopt common SSID / multiple bands & multiple access points. One possible workaround is to walk far enough away to get the phone to drop back to connecting at 2.4GHz, but this may not work if the phone needs to talk to the device using something like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which is not uncommon. An alternative is to set up an old WiFi router temporarily with the new SSID and password (or use a hot spot feature on a phone, since those are often 2.4GHz). That is probably too difficult for many customers, unfortunately. Honestly, this is a Sharp problem, though, and they should be fixing their setup process to work with modern WiFi networks instead of making their customers jump through hoops.

P.S. The Google/Nest WiFi "guest" WiFi network supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, just like the main network does. So, this is not a workaround. I've seen it suggested before, so I try to temper expectations before sending people down that path when it's unlikely to be successful.

Thanks @MichaelP that makes sense, some devices need your phone to be on the 2.4ghz band in order to snarf the wifi details, thanks for the detail.

Good trick on the old router or phone hotspot...i've used the former to cater for old devices that need WPS to connect to your wifi as well.  Fiddly but it gets you there.

Juzdu and Michael - Thank you for all your help. As Judd suggested the problem was WPA3 security. As soon as this was turned off the device connected with out a problem. Thank you both for all the ideas and support. My Microwave is now fully connected and everything is working! - Cheers - Matt
