Significant loss of download speed between points

Hello,

In a nutshell, I am experiencing exact same issue described on the following post, and unfortunately post is closed as "Answered" but that's misleading as the issue is not resolved.

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Wifi/Significant-loss-of-download-speed-at-point/m-p/769...

I have been frustrated with the speed from my access point, and i've tried setting the point very close to the router with no luck. The following is the testing I've done this afternoon,

- Run speed test on Nest Wifi Router (Software Version: 14150.376.32, Model H2D), result is 800~ mbps

- Turn off Nest Wifi point (Software Version: 14150.376.32, Model H2D).

- Turn off wifi on Mac and turn it back to connect to Wifi Router.

- Run speed test on my Macbook Pro,  result is 600~mbps

- Move the Nest Wifi point to the same room as Nest wifi router, turn it back on.

- Turn off wifi on laptop and turn it back on to make sure the MacBook Pro is connected to the point.

- Run speed test from Macbook pro, and speed is 200 ~ mbps.

- Repeat the test multiple times, and the results are consistent.

Summary, Nest Wifi point is receiving approximately 1/3 to 1/4th of the speed, no matter where it's located!

I am paying for high bandwidth, and unfortunately where the wifi router is setup is far from my office, so I have to rely on access point. If there is nothing that can be done, and this is the reality of how Nest Wifi functions, that's really disappointing. However, if you have any suggestions that could improve the performance of my Nest Wifi Access Point, I'd really appreciate it!! My backup thought is to run an Ethernet Cable from Wifi Router to laptop, which would be approximately 50ft or so, but that just sounds absurd! Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Thank you

While I've supported commercial network equipment for decades, there isn't enough control nor diagnostic data to resolve or really understand the problem with Wi-Fi extenders like the Nest Wi-Fi Point.  It may not be what you want to hear, but in my experience with helping others with similar situations, replacing the Nest Wi-Fi Point with a Nest Wi-Fi Router will generally resolve the issues you've described.

According to the specs there isn't much difference between the Router and the Point, other than antenna configuration and memory. But clearly there is a marked difference in performance.

Hi everyone,

@cstriker, thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes. You can skip this part if you’ve done it already.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestion, @BLewis.

Best,
Abi
