Slow Nest WiFi Pro or is it?

MattGCO

I have run nest WiFi Pro for about a year on a 500 meg BT connection and it showed 30 up and 210 down connected by PPPoE. Always thought was a fault in Google speed test after internet search.

Have upgraded to 900 meg connection which is showing 220 up and 110 down. I upgraded because of buffering and stuttering which has not gone away. I have 2 further points to create the mesh.

Is it really slow or is it a clocking problem, Ookla shows 19 up and down. Is it the Nest?  Cures/answers please that don't involve plugging into the BT router and using DHCP as this loses the mesh.

Sorry for length

Hi MattGCO,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you're experiencing slow speed with your Google Nest Wifi Pro system, despite upgrading your BT internet connection to 900 Mbps. You've provided helpful details about your PPPoE setup, including your main router and two mesh points, and noted the inconsistency between the Google speed test (220 up / 110 down) and Ookla (19 up/down), along with continued buffering. I'm here to help you!

Here are some details I'd like you to share and actions I recommend:

  • Verify Your Internet Speed Directly from the BT Modem/ONT and please attach the screenshot here.
    • Connect a Computer Directly: If possible, connect a computer or laptop directly to the BT modem or ONT (the device that BT provided for your fiber connection) using an Ethernet cable.
    • Run Speed Tests: Open a web browser on that computer and run speed tests on at least two different websites. I recommend starting with Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test and then trying Internet Speed Test | Fast.com
  • Check your Ethernet Cables: Damaged or older Ethernet cables can severely impact speeds. Please inspect your cables for any visible damage and ensure they are up to date.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Rusell

Hi Russell,

I am quite tech savvy and have done all of those things both before and after the upgrade. Before on a 500 line I got 505 without the Nest WiFi Pro and after the upgrade I got 902 on the 900 line. With the WiFi Pro I got just over 200 in both cases. If it was just the clocking of the WiFi Pro that was off I'd expect to see a difference but I still have some stuttering and buffering so think the WiFi Pro, I have two further access points, is throttling the speed?!?!?

Thanks

Matt

I should add that I used the previous nest WiFi router and that clocked at 505 on the 500 line.

I’m seeing the same issue. I have 1GB fiber and using the AT&T app I consistently see 1200 to 1300 up and down to the gateway.

my Nest pro is another story. I ran a test on Ookla and got 47.1 down and 4.09 up. Switched to the built in WiFi on the gateway and immediately got 316 down and 153 up. Same service just different WiFi solution.

what gives?  I’ve been having these intermittent issues for about a week now.
