Slow WiFi on Chromecast with TV 4k

Hi all.

I have just upgraded to a 4k Chromecast, from an HD model.

I noticed slow wifi speeds on the old one, but the newer one seems to do the same thing...

I have a 50Mbs line and the max speed is between 5 and 10. Which is too low for 4k streaming and steamlink gaming.

It seems to have been a problem for years now. Any solutions yet? Maybe a specific port on the router or something? I am also running at 2,4gHz. And I have done a factory reset after firmware updates...

Hi pokkel,

Thank you for posting here in the community. I'm sorry that your Chromecast is working slowly when connected to your Wifi. But no need to worry, help is here.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can check for your Chromecast with Google TV (4K):

Optimizing WiFi Connection:

  1. Location: Ensure your Chromecast is positioned close to your Wi-Fi router for a strong signal. Walls and furniture can weaken the signal.
  2. 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz: If your router offers both bands, try switching the Chromecast to the 5 GHz band. It offers faster speeds but has a shorter range. 2.4 GHz has a longer range but might be slower if congested with other devices.
  3. Other Devices: Check if other devices on your network are using a lot of bandwidth (e.g., streaming, downloads). Temporarily pausing these activities might free up bandwidth for the Chromecast.

Chromecast Settings:

  1. Update Firmware: I understand that you made sure your Chromecast has the latest firmware update. Updates can improve performance and stability. Don't forget to check for updates in the Google Home app (navigate to your Chromecast device and look for Settings > System > Software update).

Network Troubleshooting:

  1. Restart Devices: A simple restart of your Chromecast, Wi-Fi router, and modem can sometimes resolve temporary glitches. I understand that you have reset your device to factory settings.
  2. Check Internet Speed: Run a speed test using a reliable internet speed test website or app. If your internet speed is significantly lower than your plan, contact your internet service provider for troubleshooting.
  3. Network Congestion: If you have many devices connected to your Wi-Fi network, it can become congested and slow down all devices, including the Chromecast. Consider reducing the number of connected devices or upgrading your router to a model that can handle more connections.
