Slow speeds WiFi and Hardwire

Keith924
Community Member

Have Nest WiFi Pro mesh system setup (3 satellites). My speeds are horrible with 1 Gbps fiber connection:

Wifi: 70 down/15 up (Nest is within a few feet of PC)

Nest Ethernet: 650 down/15 up (plugged directly into satellite that’s reviving fiber from ISP)

ISP Ethernet: 950+ down AND up (bypass Nest, fiber direct to PC)

1.) WiFi vs Ethernet Nest connection…why such a difference in download speed?

2.) Why lose so much download speed over Ethernet through Nest versus direct to PC?

3.) Why does it seem upload speed being throttled around 15 Mbps through Nest via WiFi or Ethernet?

I’ve tried many of the common troubleshooting methods mentioned in other threads but nothing seems to improve. Any answers/suggestions on all or some of these questions would be greedily appreciated!

I’m also having a very similar experience with my new nest Wi-Fi pro set up. I had to disable this Wi-Fi network and revert to my ISP modem as my router to get normal operational Wi-Fi again.

hoping there are some answers here to help otherwise I’ll have to return this.

Same here. I was getting much better speeds with the older version of Nest Wifi. This product is a complete lemon. And the support is terrible. I can no longer return it because it's beyond 30 days. Tried filling out the warranty form and I get an error message on the form, it won't submit. This should be against the law to screw consumers like this. I've bought so much stuff from Google over the years, this is very disappointing. I guess I have to switch everything over to Amazon.

Chiming back in here to share that I found a walkthrough in this first comment, and that has helped me a lot.

I still seem to have some slowness and some lagging here and there. It is enough for me to notice, but not a problem enough for me to throw my hands in the air anymore. And thankfully the nest pro is now finally giving me good coverage in my previous dead zones, so I'm happy that it's seeming to work out now.

I wish it was simpler to install and have it just work, but using that method has helped.

If I have any future issues I may play around with DNS settings per this comment below.

Thanks for the update and information, but I’ve already returned my unit and received my refund notice. I don’t know what exactly it was, but my speeds and coverage were noticeably worse with the newer hardware. I did try some minimal tweaking to get the system to provide the same coverage and speeds as my older Nest WiFi system (even trialed 2 different modems with the Pro system), but could not obtain the levels and speeds I was accustomed to. I’m currently on my 2nd Gen Nest WiFi and I have much better performance and coverage. Added bonus, I have my 2 extra speakers back from my additional mesh devices.

Dang, stinks that I bought the new Nest WiFi Pro and my speeds (hardwired) are ~250Mb down on a 1,500Mbps connection. I have a 2.5Gpbs DOCSIS 3.1 modem, but I can find no solution to fix the speeds. I see a lot of the same issues, but no fix. Supposidly there was an update pushed out, but I have restarted my 3 pack several times and speeds are still terrible as of 1/19/23.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? What Ethernet cable are you using, CAT5 or CAT6? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

I reached out to Google Support. They left me hanging for an hour and then the chat closed with no resolution. I hooked up my 2nd Gen Nest WiFi system and got my old speeds back. Returning the Nest Pro system as it did not perform better at all and Google didn’t want to assist me in fixing it.
