Hi,

I am experiencing slow and inconsistent WiFi speeds using the Google Nest router. Please help.

When connected directly via Ethernet to the Nest WiFi Router, I get  ~915 Mbps DL / 856 Mbps UL speeds , which seems appropriate for my current internet service. (Google Fiber). I did a Speedtest on my MacBook Pro on ethernet and received 826 Mbps DL / 886 Mbps UL.

On WiFi (in the same room) the DL speeds drop to 75% of the hard-wired speeds, and the UL speeds drop to 50% of the hard-wired speed. And the haircut in speeds is generally inconsistent.

To provide some context, prior to switching to Google Fiber from Spectrum, the router was producing better speeds. On Spectrum, I was getting 920 Mbps DL / 35-40 Mbps UL and on wifi I was getting 500-580 Mbps DL / 35 Mbps UL.

I will upload a picture of what the router is receiving and what I am getting now and what I was getting before. Do you know what is causing this issue? The only thing that has changed was the ISP.

Other notes -
  • I have reset the Nest WiFi a few times, both soft reset and factory reset - does not seem to help
  • Google Home App's speed test is unhelpful because it tests the connection between the router and provider
  • Current Internet Service: Google Fiber 1GB Speed
  • Current Hardware: Google Fiber Jack & Google Nest WiFi Router & Nest Point
  • Devices are MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPhone, Apple TV, all on latest software.

The left image shows the speed from fiber jack into router. The top right was google nest wifi speed on spectrum, bottom right shows wifi speeds on google fiber.

I too am experiencing this same set of issues. Speed from the direct connection is the ISP speed, hits the Nest and is 50-30% speed.  For the first year I was getting 85% speed over WiFi.

I contacted Google and had my access point replaced, only to see the same reduced speeds. It began around Mid July.

I have the same issues, inconsistent wireless speeds even when the speeds to the router appear to be consistent. If I reset the network, this speeds up the wifi connections, but it appears to only last for a few hours or until I reboot the network again.
