Setting up smart home devices has gotten to be a real pain. The only way I've been able to do it is to go to the very far corner of my yard and so the network will switch to 2.4ghz so I can pair a new device, and I often have to do it several times in a rainstorm because the network switches back to 5 ghz on me and the pairing fails. If this is by design it has me questioning the design. Is there still no solution for this?

Hi,
I am having the same issue with setting up my wifi cameras. I can get either my main or guest network to switch to 2.4ghz. I am follow for a solution as well.

Hey @DerekWS .
Google Nest Wifi selects the best connection based off of the capability of the device being connected and not the Google Nest Wifi device: How Nest Wifi and Google Wifi 2.4, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands work . 5Ghz does not have the range that 2.4Ghz does which is why you get a "2.4Ghz connection" when you get so far out in your yard.
The disconnects from the 2.4Ghz devices is on the device side and can be due to a number of reasons:
I suspect this is due to either WPA3 or IPv6 being enabled. A lot of older devices (and some newer ones) are not capable of one or both of the aforementioned and as a result will continuously disconnect or have issues setting them up. Disable WPA3 first and test. If the issue persists, also disable IPv6.
Please advise if the issue resolves.

Hi B-Rice,
The Google Wifi mesh system uses the same name for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band networks. This means that the Wi-Fi network uses both radio bands. But keep in mind: while both bands can be used, the personal devices (a smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) will connect to only one radio band at any given time. Nest Wifi, Google Wifi, or Nest Wifi Pro attempts to select the band that will deliver the best performance for your device. Currently there is no option to manually disable either of the bands or to connect to them separately.
Give these steps a try:
Create a hotspot with a mobile phone. However, 2 mobile phones are required:
Use the first device to create a hotspot (mobile phone).
How to set up a mobile hotspot:
Android:
iOS:
Let us know how it goes.
Best,
Abi
