Upload speed throttled

Tiptopp

Using Google Home speed test I see the expected 35Mbps down/5Mbps up - close to what my broadband provider says that it’s providing.  However, using the Speedtest app on my iPhone 12 I see a similar 35Mbps down but only 0.5Mbps up.

I’ve just done a full factory reset of my Google hardware, having previously done a reboot of my router.

This clearly, to me anyway, indicates that it is the Google Nest Wi-Fi that is throttling my upload speed.  It’s a relatively recent problem, but is causing me issues.

I’ve seen this discussed, but can’t see any resolutions in those posts.

Anyone have any ideas,

Hi Jeff.

i spent some time speaking with my broadband provider and tested via another router to see if it was their problem. At the same time I rewired my connections so more traffic goes through my Powerline devices. I also turned off the 24 hour Google Nest camera feed so it now only records events, significantly reducing the upload volume.

After doing all of this, and switching back to my original router, download speeds are good at 35Mbps or more and upload has vastly increased to close to 9Mbps.

So this might be a combination of all the things I did, but it might also be that our line rating had also been upgraded to around 10Mbps, which I noticed when discussing with my provider.

So I have to say it probably wasn’t the Google devices, although they were restarted and factory reset during the process as well, but I won’t be able to categorically say what helped, but just that I’m more happy again!

Thanks for your concern and help.

Paul

Hey there, Tiptopp.

Sorry for the speed issues you're seeing. I know it's frustrating getting those lower than expected numbers. I know you have seen a few other threads on this, but I want to make sure you try these things out before we move onto other steps.

  • If you have IPv6 enabled, try disabling that in the Home app's WiFi settings
  • If you have any preferred activities set in the Home app, try removing those
  • Try testing if you set a priority device and then run your test again. It doesn't matter which device you prioritize, just have one set before running the speed test.

If you see any changes at all, for better or worse, after trying those things out, let me know. I look forward to your response.

Thanks.

Thanks for replying, Jeff.
In response to your message, I did various things with the following results;

  • IPV6 was already disabled.
    Initial test - 34Mbps down 2Mbps up
  • Prioritised iPhone and tested on the same - 5Mbps up
  • Reset and tested - 4Mbps up
  • Prioritised iPad and tested on iPhone - 9Mbps down and 0.5Mbps up
  • Reset - 34 Mbps down and 4Mbps up
  • Enabled IPV6. 34Mbps down and 4.5Mbps up
  • Disabled IPV6. 32Mbps down and 5Mbps up.
  • Retested several times with similar results (4 - 4.5Mbps up).

My two conclusions from this are that prioritising a device, even if it’s not being used actively, kills the speed for everything else, and that the Nest devices like any other attention you give them so give a little bit more back to you!

I’m hoping that you get something more technical out of these results - happy to do more!

Thanks for running through all those tests, Tiptopp. I know that was a lot to test out.

I'll take that info into account as I look more into this. I'll let you know what more I can find out soon.

Thanks.

Hey, Tiptopp.

I know it's been a while since I touched base. I still haven't been able to find resolution on this issue, but others have reported similar results. We're still looking into things, but I didn't want you to think I had abandoned you here. By any chance have you seen any changes in your situation?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Great news, and I appreciate the update! I'm sorry it was such a long road to find some answers.

Before I mark this as resolved, is there anything else you might need?

Thanks,
