Wifi connection on 2 laptops is weak

Hi there!

My setup is the following:

Goggle nest Wifi pro

1 works as the router - softwareversion 3.78.518349 - Bridged with router from my internetprovider

2 points placed around my home

So far my connection has been fine but now i have 2 issues. Both are standard laptops but from our workplaces. We have to use VPN´s otherwise we cannot work.

My work laptop shows 1-2 bars of connection wherever i am in the house with low speed and my gaming laptop has full bars with full speed

My wifes work laptop cant maintain the connection and loses it randomly.

Both laptops work fine if i connect them via cable to the access point. The access point is 2 meters away from our desk. The router is placed downstairs and the accespoint is placed upstairs. the distance is 5 meters in a straight line.

I have tried resets, forgetting the network, reset the networkcard and nothing seems to fix the issues.

Our phones work fine, other laptops work fine and playstation 5 connects fine as well.

What do i do?

Hi @pman1987,

Thanks for posting. I understand that you and your wife are having trouble with your work laptops' Wi-Fi connection on your Nest Wifi Pro system; I know it's a huge headache when your personal devices like your gaming laptop and PS5 work perfectly, but your work machines can't maintain a stable speed or connection, especially when you're only two meters away from an access point. I appreciate you sharing the specific information and all the steps you've already tried, like resetting the network cards and forgetting the network. Don't worry, let's work together to get this resolved.

To help me narrow this down further, I have a few more questions:

  • Are you using a modem/router combo provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
  • Are the affected laptops running Windows OS or another operating system?
  • Do you have the 160 MHz channel setting enabled in the Google Home app? (You can find this under Network settings > Advanced networking). Some older 5GHz-capable laptops struggle with this mode.

In the meantime, we can start with some fundamental steps to refresh the connection for those specific devices:

  • Toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: On both laptops, please disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for about 10 seconds, then re-enable them. Sometimes, Bluetooth interference can weaken a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal.
  • Check for Updates: Ensure that the Wi-Fi drivers and the operating system on both laptops are fully up to date.
  • Perform a 2-minute power cycle to your network: Disconnect the power from your modem (removing any backup batteries) and unplug the Ethernet and power cables from your primary Nest Wifi Pro, as well as all additional points; leave everything unplugged for a full two minutes, then reconnect the modem first, waiting for its lights to remain solid before plugging back in the primary router and finally the additional points.

I’ll be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Daniel
