Google wifi timeout at final setup

I have a google wifi model h2d w 1 router; 3 points.  Was working for years (2017 approx) until now. With latest migration of nest thermostats to google; did i successfully.  A week later, noticed points failed.  Tried to reboot but no success.   So i spent at least 20+ hrs on the following:

1. Reset google router and first point then added back 1 point ( the other 2 are unplugged ); point completed connected to local ssid but failed on “final setup bit,… operation time out”

2. Re-installed Google Home app and tried step 1.  Same error

3. Use a different iphone and did step 1. Same error

4. Log out of Google home app n log back in and did setup point.  Same error.

Did step 1, 2, 3 n 4 numerous time always the same error

Note:  while doing all steps above, iphone 14 has:

VPN private relay off

home app local network enabled

do not disturb Enabled

Current status:  i do have wifi since router is working but no extended mesh capability due to no point is working

Can someone help me PLEASE.   I ran out of idea or approach…. I might have to buy a new google wifi mesh 6e but afraid it might be a back end provisioning on the final step to handshake my device topology w google icloud ….   Please help help.  Thx in advance

Hi @Tominator280,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear about the connectivity issues you're experiencing with your Google Wifi points and the persistent timeouts during the final setup phase. I appreciate you sharing the extensive troubleshooting you've already performed—such as reinstalling the Google Home app, factory resetting your devices, and verifying your iPhone settings; it's understandable how frustrating this can be after spending so much time trying to restore your mesh network. I'm happy to assist you.

To assist you further, I’d like to know some further details:

  • What is the color of the light on the parent and child points?
  • Is the child point within the recommended distance from the parent point? The recommended distance is between 20 and 25 feet (6 and 7 meters).
  • Do you have any switches in your network setup?
  • Did you try to set up the points wirelessly or through a wired connection?

Keep me posted; I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,

Ashley

Hello,

My points dropped offline back in November last year. I finally just had success with Google Support getting them back. They had me set custom dns in the home and then factory reset the points. I was then able to add them

- Open the Google Home app .
- Tap Home and then Wifi Wi-Fi.
- Tap Network settings settings icon and then Advanced Networking.
- Tap DNS. And then change the DNS settings to Custom and set primary server as 1.1.1.1 and the secondary DNS server as 1.0.0.1

- At the bottom of the Nest Wifi point, above the "G" logo, press and hold the small circle etched into the device for 15 seconds.
- The factory reset process starts about 5 seconds in. Continue to hold the button for 10 more seconds until there's a sound to confirm the device is reset.

Hope this helps you too!
