Wifi speed dropping after ISP upgarde to 100/100 Mbit

jb23
Community Member

I used to have a 50/50 (download/upload) connection with my ISP. Using Google Nest (one router + 2 points) I was actually getting 50/50 measured over the wifi (not cabel). The speed was very consistent i.e. everytime I checked - for more than 12 months.

My ISP forced me to upgrade to 100/100 - and then the trouble started.

When I use the function on the Google Home App to measure the speed received from the ISP I measure a constant +100/+100 ish. speed. When I measure the Wifi speed (not cable) on my computer I am now getting 10/20. If I run the "reboot network" from the Google Home App (or pull the plug) and I measure the Wifi speed (not cable) on my computer - I am now getting 100/100.

After a while the speed drops again to 10/20...........

Can anybody help please.....

try troubleshooting your PC, if that’s not the problem, try unplugging your ISP(internet service provider) modem and nest wifi, for both 1 min.

Thank you for your reply.

There is nothing wrong with the computer - it measures the speed as it should.

As I try to describe - if I unplug / or reset the Google Modem i come right back up to speed 100/100.

My problem is: The Google Nest falls back down again to 10/20 after a while EVEN when the ISP is still delivering the 100/100.

Hey folks,

@lighx, appreciate your helpful response.
@jb23, thanks for posting. Sorry to hear you're having this issue. To confirm, did your Internet service provider re-configure your modem router after the upgrade?

Best,
Abi

I have a fibre optic cable for the connection. The Modem receiving the signal is provided by the ISP. They did reset this modem (upgraded the configuration) as part of the trouble shooting. After the resetting we could measure the promised 100/100 mbit. As mentioned I do get 100/100 measured - even as wifi signal. Challange is that it dies down to 10/20 after a while.

Thanks beforehand !

Hi jb23,

Thanks for the update. A few questions: how many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes. Skip this part if you've done it already.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

Dear Abi,

Thank you for the guidance.

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues. ALDREADY IN BRIDGE MODE
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart. GOOD POINT - BUT I HAVE NOT CHANGED ANYTHING - REMEMBER THAT BEFORE ISP UPGRADE IT WAS RUNNING 50/50 VERY CONSISTENTLY.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password. NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS
  • Turn off IPv6. WAS OFF
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right. DONE
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes. Skip this part if you've done it already. DONE

It is now up to speed - I will monitor to see if it drops over time again. If it does I will try Factory Resetting as you suggest as last option.

Will be back - Thanks!

Dear Abi / Lovely

Unfortunately there is no solution yet.

I have now tried the suggestions from you Abi as posted yesterday - but the speed drops over time to approx. 13/13.

I have now tried the Factory Reset og Nest Router as well as my two Points. The same pattern shows i.e. the speed right after the reset goes up to 100+/100+ BUT falls back down after a short while to 13/13 ish.

When I use the Google Home app to do a "Speed measurement" on the router is shows consistenly 100+/100+ from the router to the ISP.

What I do not understand: Before the ISP upgraded the speed from 50/50 to 100/100 I was measuring WiFi to 50/50 very consistently. After the upgrade I am getting this much lower WiFi speed after a while.

Any suggestions?

All the best

jb23

Hi jb23,

I appreciate you sharing your experience after doing our suggested steps. Right now, make sure to disable Preferred Activities on your end. If it's already off, toggle it on, then off again and check if there have been any changes to your network speed or not.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Lovely
