low tech trying to learn

I put in a nest platform a couple years ago.  The Model on the bottom of the units says AC 1304.  One next to my router and one node top help wifi in the farthest bedroom.

I added another point, due to the distance, model H2E.  Still having some problems streaming netflix from time to time, and I figured out the two points are near the max 30ft apart so my thought is to add another point to reduce the distance between them.

Note sure what model will work with what I have.

Thanks for any help.

Brian

Hello @MChang

The key to optimizing performance in this system is placement of all of the units. Adding more isn't necessarily better. The optimal placement advice is to have the primary (the one connected to your internet service via Ethernet) placed as close to the center of your home as possible. Then, any secondary units should be placed no more than one or two rooms away from the primary in any direction. They should be close enough to the primary to get a strong 5GHz WiFi connection for themselves. From there, they can provide 5GHz and 2.4GHz WiFi coverage to more distant clients. Placing a secondary in an area that doesn't have a good connection now is going to be counterproductive. Trying to string them together in a long line is extremely unlikely to produce acceptable results. So, before spending more money on new equipment, I would experiment with placement of the units you have now, first. You may be able to buy an inexpensive Ethernet cable that is long enough to let you move the primary around a bit without having to move your internet service provider equipment.

Michael:  My primary unit that is connected via ethernet cable sits rights next to my netgear router/modem.  There is no existing ethernet point in the middle of my home.  Brian

I think my point was that if you can't get the primary located closer to the center of the home, adding more access points in between isn't going to help. You may need to buy an Ethernet cable and run it between where your modem is and a better (more central) location for the primary.

Michae,  good morning.  I brought in an ethernet cable and moved the AC 1304 into the middle of the house and it is hooked up to the modem/router directly.  The node in the bedroom is model H2E.  I checked the download speed of the television.  Not high quality and on the google app it said 117 Mbps.  On Roku it says the connection is excellent.  Should the 117 be enough to allow decent streaming without pauses in the feed?    Thanks Brian

117Mbps should be plenty to stream video. It sounds like moving the primary improved things – are you happier with the way it's all working now?

Still having the same problem streaming.  It is only netflix, no other apps.  Wierd.  it is an off brand private brand TV, could it be the quality of the internal components within the TV.  Has worked fine for three years or so, just started acting up in the last 2-3 weeks.  thanks.  Brian

Hmm. Since it's only happening with one app, I have to suspect that app may have been updated on that TV, and the new version isn't working quite well enough. I've never been too impressed with "smart" TV apps, to be honest. A streaming stick (Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Google's Chromecast with Google TV) might be a relatively inexpensive way to get around this issue.
