Adding a mini device to a media being cast to a chromecast fails

Adding a second device to any media being cast to a chromecast -via the media icon on Google Home App- fails miserably for 2 weeks now. It is a feature I have been using for well over an year and was so happy I bought a bunch of Google Minis to reach almost any room by now. Details below:

I cast from YTMusic app from any of my phones (Samsung S22 Ultrta, S21 or S10) with latest android to any of my Chromecasts (either v2 or v3), then I go to Google Home app to add a second device (mini, chromecast or group) and it fails. If it is another Chromecast, a Mini or a JBL (works with Google) gives a "There was an error. Try again" message, if it is a group fails imediatly with no message. All software and most hardware involved are Google (except the phones are Samsung and network is Ubiquiti).

I have downgraded Google Home App to version 2.56.x and down further to a 2.55.x to no avail. Havent factory reset any chromecast as both stopped working at the same time.

If I start on a Mini and then add other devices it works, it is just when I start with a Chromecast (which is my main use as I like to listen to music while the videos play on TV.

It is a "glitch" (as defined by a Google support person) making me regret to have buyed 9 Nest devices just to have this otherwise amazing feature.

I have talked to support on my Google One account, sent feedback on Google Home App and searched the foruns. Hope I posted on the right forum.

Any inputs appreciated, thanks,

Fabricio

Hi fnees,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue here. To confirm, are you using your Google Home Mini as an external speaker for your TV? Are all the speakers included in a group? Also, what are the cast firmware version of your devices?

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi thank you for the reply!

I am not using my TV, I am using the chromecast on it.

I cast from YTMusic app from my phone with android to any of my devices then I go to Google Home app to add a second device (mini, chromecast or group) and it fails. On Google Home app it is a green icon right on the main screen. I would send a capture of it failing but I don't know how...

It used to be only when I started with a chromecast, but now it doesn't matter.

My devices have different cast versions:

1.56.309385 for 6 minis, including living RIGHT on a pair

1.54.279716 on mini LEFT on a pair

1.56.282045 on visitors mini

1.56.309385 chromecasts

1.52.272222 JBL with Google Home

I would send a capture of it failing but I don't know how..

Any input appreciated.

Hey fnees,

Got it! I tried it on my end and I don't have the issues adding Google Home/Nest devices. To confirm, does it work when you're not adding the JBL and Chromecast?

Hi Muddi!

It works with JBL too. Just Chromecast it does not.

Thanks!

Hey fnees,

Thanks for the added information. Sorry to know that you're having issues replying on this thread. To confirm, are you adding speakers on existing audio groups while you're casting the music? When was the last time that you are able to use it?

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi,

I am using a feature on Google Home App.  When you have speakers or chromecasts on you Google Home there appears a green round icon right on the main screen the same way that if you have lights there is a yellow icon, thermostats a red icon, cameras a blue icon and so on.

If you clic that icon you have access to all media being played/cast. Under the media, say a song, there appears the list of all compatible devices. Both individuals and groups. If you check a box besides the device/group the media gets cast to that device/group.

It's an amazing feature you guys should really try it out!

Thanks,

Hi Muddi,

Thank you for your answer!

The TV is not involved on the iussue. Everything is Google (my TV is not).

I cast from YTMusic app from my phone with android to Chromecast, then I go to Google Home app to add a second device (mini, chromecast or group) and it fails. Seems that the Media icon on Google App is not very popular otherwise people would get what I mean. It is nothing to do with you I assure, I have talked to many  on Google support team and everybody seems to miss the point... Google Home App has a feature to add devices to the media being cast. I have been using it for a long time now.

I have many groups, but it won't make a difference.

Anyway, here are me cast fw versions:

Chromecasts:

1.56.275994 - 1.56.291998

Google Home:

1.56.309385 (kitchen, kids, office, master bd, living RIGHT)  - 1.54.279716 (living LEFT) - 1.56.282045 (visitors) - 1.52.272222 (JBL)

Thank you so much for any input.
