Automatic Light/Dark Theme Switching Issue on Nest Hub 2nd Gen

mihau
Community Member

Hi,

I've encountered an issue with my Nest Hub 2nd Gen related to the automatic switching between light and dark themes. Despite having the theme setting set to "Auto", the theme doesn't change automatically or changes at the wrong times. This issue seemed to occur after the most recent update. Previously, this function was working properly.

I have attempted to restore factory settings by holding down the volume up and down buttons, but this hasn't resolved the issue.

Hey folks,

Sorry for the delays here. It seems like we've been seeing quite an increase in reports around the Nest Hub (2nd generation) that keeps on going back to light mode. We shared this with the team and need some help to further investigate the issue.

Please immediately send feedback once you experience the issue on your Nest display. Just say, "Hey Google, send feedback," followed by keywords: GHT3 Nest Hub randomly illuminates at nightLearn more about how to send feedback on our Help Center.

Once you've submitted feedback, please let us know in the comments what the current firmware version of your device is.

Cheers,

Muddi

My guess would be that all of you have recently updated your hubs. Maybe thru the preview programme?

Now the latest update has now fluffed up the light setting.

My issue was no audio on live video or recordings. Eventually after weeks of being told to reset the device and other troubleshooting that would never have worked, an update was finally made available and it resolved the problem.

Unfortunately by fixing one problem, they caused another. I'm also having to change the light to dark mode pretty much daily.

It seems by laying off as many staff as they did and concentrating on phones and tablets, Big G don't seem to class their current Nest range a priority.

This should be resolved by Xmas if we're lucky.

Just want to report that this has also been happening to me randomly for at least a couple of weeks if not more. Was dark mode this morning and at some point in the day it changed back to light mode.

I sent feedback in the Hub like the posts suggested but I don't want to let this thread die until this is fixed.

So interesting addition to this topic.
I decided to turn on Developer Options to see the uptime showing since the change back to Light theme seemed to happen after a reboot. Turns out it's not actually rebooting. The versions are not changing numbers either. Something else is causing the displays to do a soft cycle of some kind that is not counting as a full reboot. It's also listing "Last reboot reason" as "unset". I had to change back to Dark theme this morning and checked the uptime. It's uptime is showing 156:10:25 (156hr10min25sec).

Starting to sound more like this has nothing to do with updates and it's an actual bug. I have sent a bug report before, many weeks ago, but you never get feedback on it. How can I confirm if my reports are being received?

U can't buddy. Google don't actually look at the reports. It's more of a way to appease a disgruntled customer while they try to fix the problem they've caused. It's just a case of waiting until they get round to it. How

If Google are aware of the issue, then why are we leaving feedback about it. Surely they would just rather send out a settings fix instead of reading countless feedback all saying the same thing?

I am the one that originally opened and then reopened this post. I see that someone changed the title of my topic too cause this was not the title.

I came here today because it changed to light mode yet again. I see there is a recommended answer now? I see it pertains to the nest hub 2nd generation. My hub is the first generation so does it still apply?

I don't appreciate my post being changed to fit the masses. Apparently I need to open a new post cause mine is a first generation issue now? The problem is not fixed nor solved as the green "go to answer" alludes too

Google hub display set to ambient worked fine for years but in the last six months it started brightening the screen in the middle of the night while the room is still dark.  This wakes me up.  I have to put a tissue, piece of cloth or whatever is handy over it and then it senses the darkness again.

I've reset it several times and swapped it with one I have in another room but they both do the same thing.

Hello. I've had this nest hub for around a year, and lately it has showing this behavior:

No matter what configuration it has, it will turn on at around 4 am with the photo gallery at the brightest setting. Every single night.

Normally, it shoud turn the screen off at night, but at 4 am, it ignores that, and boom: the photo gallery at the brightest setting.

I've read a lot of people with this issue.

Hi tbolado,

Thanks for posting and letting us know about your Google Nest Hub concern. We'll work together to identify the cause of the problem and find a solution. Is this a first- or second-generation Google Nest Hub? Were there any recent changes made? What troubleshooting steps have you taken so far?

I look forward to your response.

Juni

Its first Generation. The only change recently added was activating Ambient mode. It still turns the sceen on at 4 am, full brightness with the picture frame.

Hi tbolado,

Thanks for the details you’ve shared. You can try the factory reset; this erases all your personalized settings and restores the factory default settings. It won’t automatically reconnect to WI-Fi, and you’ll need to set it up again. Check out the article below to know more about it.

Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays

Hello again. I've already factory reseted it 4 or 5 times these weeks... and the result is the same. Last night it turned on again at arround 4 am.

Sorry Muddi,

My bad with my copy and pasting! But thank you, I will send feedback via my Nest Hub if it keeps happening. Fingers crossed for the update, as our Nest Doorbell is working really well despite the Nest Hub issues.

Warmest regards,

Alan

HI All, I have given up on the device, packed and selling it! It is a shame, but after months dealing with this issue, reporting it and not seeing any progress, I decided to buy another smart speaker from a competitor. Good luck and hope it gets fixed.

I think google doesn’t care that people use these devices as bedside alarm clocks also. It’s very disruptive to be woken by bright lights beside you at night and even more disruptive to have to start talking to it when it happens to report it and waking up your partner in the middle of the night.
this is getting ridiculous. Just fix it already. 😡

Hello everyone,

I understand this issue has been ongoing for quite some time, and I apologize for the inconvenience it has caused so far. We've shared all the information with our team, but we do not have any updates to share right now.

Meanwhile. Please update the thread with a photo showing your display settings on the Google Home app.

Cheers,

Muddi

Look. The display setting are set to dark and it changes itself to bright without the settings changing usually in the middle of the night. How hard can this be to find. Time to ditch Google products I think.

A new Nest Hub purchased in July 2023 (my fourth in the house) dimly illuminates approximately half way through the night and remains that way until the morning light unless I activate it whereby it will come fully on and then go back to fully dark/blank operation.

No its not motion sensor or movement detection! I tried everything before I contacted Google support.

I have been told it is a software bug they are aware of and will be fixed and I was also asked to flag the issue via the Feedback function which I did.

Hopefully given it is in my bedroom a fix will come soon.

I am posting this problem in case anyone else is experiencing it on newly purchased displays and utilize the 'do not disturb' function. If you are please report it to add some urgency to the problem.

Regards

@Monty_ME

Did Google Nest Support have you do a simple reboot, either by unplugging it for a minute or so, or by rebooting from within the Google Home app?

First thing I did...give me a break. Google support linked to my device and ran diagnostics on it. That is how they determined it was a software issue.

@Monty_ME

Sorry.

Another reason I am ditching Google. So many bugs across all Google products that they don't GAF about. Pixels, Nest, Home, Wifi, etc. all buggy garbage. Threw all my Nest speakers in the trash and picked up an Apple Homepod. Going to be getting an iPhone as Pixels are just plain ol' trash.

I do feel for you! I love the Google home management concept! If it didn't have issues I'd really be happy. In the last 5 months my limited ecosystem has:

* The Photo Album frozen issue... repaired sort of but still has issue

* A Bedroom display that illuminated in the middle of the night (above)

* A new 2nd gen Nest Cam that can't replace a  basement Dropcam due to a ambient light IR detection issue (was told to bad)

* A loss of connectivity to Genni devices  in the late evening although the vendors app continues to work,

I have no plan to add  addition  critical systems to Google Home (like Thermostats, garage doors, door lock, etc) in the foreseeable future until (and if) this service becomes more reliable.

well it happened again 😞 was going for so long staying in dark mode until today. i walked in and saw it was disconnected from the internet for some odd reason as all my other devices were online. so i rebooted it and it came backup in light mode.

Ambient eq is still completely broken. I have a flashlight in the middle of the night on my bedside stand. I can't understand how from every service you provide, with hardware or not, quality control is so bad and something like this still goes to production. I have too keep rebooting the **bleep** nest hub to make ambient eq work for a while then it breaks again. Never getting a single google product again in my life ffs. Firmware is on version 11.20230306.3.112018.
