Broken Speaker Pair

Jester1868

Hello all. I had a speaker pair of Google Home Maxes when one ended up freezing to the point where I needed to factory reset it. After doing so, I was able to re-add it to my "Home" but I can't unpair the old speaker pair to configure a new pair. In other words, the previously-functioning speaker is still connected to the now "phantom" pair and shows as the pair name while the previously-mentioned speaker is solo. When attempting to unpair, nothing happens. I can provide screenshots to help elaborate if required. Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Juni,

For a few years I have had two Onkyo GX-30s that have been in a speaker pair. They were in a group with a Nest Hub max and used to play fine. When the Sonos lawsuit came about the speaker group stopped working, but I did continue to use the Onkyo speaker pair as the default audio device for the Nest Hub max, which has worked fine for the last 2 years (despite the issues controlling the volume, worked via voice control though).

A week ago we had to turn the power off in the house for a small wiring change in the house (different circuit to the devices in question) since turning the power back on the devices connect to the wifi (google wifi mesh system) but I cannot play music on them anymore, just get the response "sorry something went wrong". I've deleted the devices, re added, struggled to pair them again but nothing works, they will not play music, neither individually nor in a pair. Now I can't even remove them from the pair they are in, just nothing happens.

The devices are still close to wifi points and nothing has moved for the last 18 months, so why they suddenly refuse to work is strange and very annoying.

Any help would be appreciated, let me know if you need any more information

Hi mikeyp8,

Thanks for the details you’ve shared. Does it happen when you use voice commands, via casting, or both? Try to create a new home structure and add your devices there, then observe if you will get a different experience. See the steps below on how to create a new home structure.

  1. Open the Google Home appGoogle Home.
  2. At the top, tap AddAdd.
  3. Tap Create a new home.
  4. Follow the steps.

Note: You can have up to 5 homes in your account.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni,

I added and 'test' home and factory reset the speakers (as I can't delete them in my 'home'), added the speakers to the test home and both work by voice command and casting individually which is good. I tried making them a pair and now they don't work anymore, and also I can't unpair them now!

Any ideas how I add them back to my 'Home' (I don't need to pair them although would prefer to) and get them to work?

Thanks

Hey mikeyp8,

Thanks for trying that. When you say they won’t work anymore, are they not responding anymore? Or won’t power on? You can factory reset; this erases all your personalized settings and restores the factory default settings. It won’t automatically reconnect to WI-Fi, and you’ll need to set it up again back to the old home structure. Check out the article below to know more about it.

Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays

Hi, sorry should have been clear, when I say 'won't work'  they aren't playing music when asked, I just get 'sorry something went wrong.'

I've been trying different ways to get music to play, a summary below. The Onkyo speakers are reset and now back in my home, one called black and one called white (because that is their respective colour)

- when I ask a speaker to play a radio station or spotify the speaker responds 'playing . . . .' then says 'sorry something went wrong'. Note the other speaker has the microphone off.

- if I try to cast from the Google home app, I get a message that the playback isn't supported on either of these speakers.  Other devices work OK.

- I've added these speakers to a speaker group and it will show its playing on the group on the nest hub max, but there's no sound.

- I have a old Chromecast Audio plugged into an amp, if I play music on this first I can sometimes then add these Onkyo speakers through the Google home app and get them playing as well. This can be variable and fails more often than it works.

Can you help with why I'm having such issues playing music? The WiFi is working fine and nothing is being moved physically. The Internet is fine as other speakers can play.  There just appears to be issues getting them to play, especially in a speaker group or speaker pair that now no longer works at all when it did before.
