Can speakers only allow voice match users to activate Smart locks?

I just set up a smart lock (uloq) that is compatible with Google home. However, I'm concerned about the scenario where a stranger outside the house activates my Google home to unlock the smart lock. With this in mind, is there a way to still allow anyone to use my Google home (ie to play music) without having to worry about non voice matched people from activating the smart lock?

Hi @jwizard95,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand that you are having some questions regarding whether your speakers only allow matched users to activate the smart locks or other devices, let me share some information!

This is precisely what Google's Voice Match feature is built to do: separate secure, personal commands from general, public requests. Based on how Voice Match operates, here is a simple breakdown of the two scenarios you described:

  1. The Secure Action (Unlocking Your Door): When you set up Voice Match, you teach the Assistant to recognize your unique voice by creating a "voice model." Actions that access private information or control secure devices (like your "uloq" smart lock) are protected as "personal results."

When someone tries to unlock the door, the Assistant analyzes their voice. If the voice does not match your saved model, the Assistant treats the person as a "guest" and will block the request, preventing them from accessing your personal results or unlocking the lock. Only when it identifies your voice will it execute the command.

  1. The General Action (Playing Music): When a guest or anyone whose voice isn't matched asks for a general command (like "play music," "what's the weather," or "tell me a joke"), the Assistant can still fulfill the request. It handles this as a "guest query" and does not provide any personal information or access to secure devices. This allows your speaker to remain useful for everyone without compromising your security.

An Important Note on Your Devices: The information above describes how Voice Match is designed to function. However, you are correct to note that this can vary. Since you are using a non-Google device as your speaker and a third-party smart lock (uloq), the reliability of this feature depends entirely on how those manufacturers have integrated Google's technology. For this security to work, both your speaker and the lock must fully support Google's security protocols for Voice Match.

I will be sharing a Google Help Center article: Turn on voice recognition with Voice Match. That explains these features in more detail, and we highly recommend you also check the support guides for your specific devices.

Best regards,

Debora
