Can’t control Chromecast with Google home anymore

Not sure if this is the right category as the categories don’t make sense for my issue, but here goes.

Until a few weeks ago, I was able to control my Chromecast with my voice using my Google Home hub. Now the hub doesn’t even see the device. I know it’s working as I can cast from YouTube and other streaming services from my phone. I can also see it in the Google Home app, but doesn’t matter what I do, I am unable to control it with Google home. It’s not the end of the world if I can’t, but it was really convenient to pause ff or rewind and exact time or jump to the next video in the queue just by saying it. So if there’s a way to fix this, I’d like to do it. Anyone have an idea what’s going on and how to fix it? Thanks

Hi hechtic,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are experiencing issues with your Chromecast and your Google Nest Hub. It's frustrating that your device is not working properly when using voice commands to control it. But no need to worry, help is here.

Before we get started with further troubleshooting, let me ask you some questions:

  1. What Chromecast model do you have?
  2. What device do you have? (1st Generation or 2nd Generation)
  3. What's the Fuchsia version of your display?
  4. Did you receive any errors?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to fix this issue:

  1. Confirm that the Chromecast is set up and the customer is able to cast from a supported app.
  2. Rename the Chromecast device and try again.
  3. If the customer is getting an error message, troubleshoot the error message as you normally would for Google Home voice casting.

Other details to take into consideration:

Voice Command Clarity: Try using more specific commands like:

  1. "OK Google, cast YouTube on (name of cast device)."
  2. "OK Google, play music on (name of cast device)."

Troubleshoot Google Assistant:

  1. Try using other voice commands to see if Google Assistant is functioning correctly.
  2. If you encounter issues with other commands, it might be a broader Google Assistant problem.
  3. In the Google Home app, go to Assistant Settings > Your Places and verify your home location is correct.

Update App:

  1. Ensure you're using the latest version of the Google Home app (if applicable for managing Chromecast). Updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements.

Check Internet Connection:

  1. A weak or unstable internet connection can cause Google Assistant issues. Run a speed test to verify your internet speed. If it's low, contact your internet service provider for troubleshooting.

Please follow this good article to learn more details to Use Google Assistant on your TV with Chromecast or to Reboot your Chromecast device.

Please keep me posted.

Best,

Mario

  1. What Chromecast model do you have? H2G2-42
  2. What device do you have? (1st Generation or 2nd Generation) Not sure
  3. What's the Fuchsia version of your display? 20.20240530.3.236
  4. Did you receive any errors? I do not

The Chromecast is set up. As i wrote in the post, I had been able to control the Chromecast with my voice using the Google Hub until recently, but that stopped working for some reason. I just reset the Chromecast to the factory settings and went through the needlessly painful process of adding it back via Google Home. Yes, I can cast to it. No, I still cannot control it with voice commands. I changed the name. It had no effect. Though Google Home keeps changing the name back, which I don't appreciate or understand. I used to be able say things, "hey google, pause tv" and it would pause the youtube video i was casting. I tried the old name, AndrewCast. I tried the generic name, Chromecast. It now tells nothing is playing on the TV. Other voices commands like asking for the time or weather work just fine with the hub. I'm running the most recent version of the Google Home app. Even deleted my app and reinstalled it just to be sure. You say "

  1. In the Google Home app, go to Assistant Settings > Your Places and verify your home location is correct."  Not sure how to do this. I've tried to find that in Google Home, but I can't. Would be happy to try if you give me some guidance.

Not sure what else to say, but happy to offer any information you need. thanks.

Checking in @chaconmorales to see if I can get a response to this. thanks.

Clearly your (and I)  needing more input beyond a standard copy+paste resonse is more than they can cope with. It has been commented on by myself and friends and family how increasingly dumb Google "smart" home devices have been getting. Given how much they are pushing Gemini, the irony is not lost on us all.

I have the same symptoms. My Google Home Hub no longer sees my Chromecast at all. It's been this way for at least several weeks, though not certain when it started. I tried factory resetting and setting up the Chromecast from scratch. Still nothing. I (used to) cast regularly from the Home Hub to the Chromecast, and it's important to my home AV setup.
