Can't get nest mini to connect - my phone isn't supported on device utility

Kesepton

I am trying to connect these to my home app. Says I need to use device utility to connect the mini to Wi-Fi. When I go to download the app, it says it isn't supported on my phone because it's made for an older android.

What can I do here?

Hey everyone,

We’re aware of the issue preventing download of the Device Utility app for some Pixel phone users running Android 14 and higher. The team is currently investigating. As a workaround in the meantime, you can use another device or Pixel running an older Android version to connect your speakers to the Google Home app.

We appreciate your patience, and we’ll keep you updated when there’s more to share.

Thank you,
Google Home & Nest Team

This is a year later and still the same problem. We don't have an older version of Pixel all our other phones are even newer. This is crazy.

Sorry not a year later.im reading the original date in the English setting not US setting. So that was posted in Oct 24 it's now Feb 25 and it still appears to have no fix.

It's been nearly 4 months, is this issue going to be fixed or are google nest minis now effectively redundant for people with newer pixel phones?

It is Feb 18th 2025 and I am having the above issue and this is still the "Recommended Answer"? What is the fix or are they no longer supporting the Nest product line?

Get the android app APKmirror and search device utility apkmirror to get an old version of the device utility app that works!

This issue remains unsolved for several months now. When will you fixt it ?

Get the android app APKmirror and search device utility apkmirror to get an old version of the device utility app that works

I don't have an old Android device, I have an up to date pixel phone and I'm trying to set up a nest mini. What is the solution?

EDIT WITH SOLUTION TO STUPID PROBLEM THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST:

Get the android app APKmirror and search device utility apkmirror to get an old version of the device utility app that works!

That doesn't work either it doesn't recognise my WiFi

It's Feb 2025, how have you still not got a fix for this? I have just bought a nest speaker that I can't even use!! Please tell me how I can get this speaker to work? I don't have another pixel phone or another Google device! Can I do it from an iPhone????

Get the android app APKmirror and search device utility apkmirror to get an old version of the device utility app that works! I set mine up this way

Like a lot of people. I don't keep old phones laying around a house.  Is there another app I can download and use?.

so, you've been aware of this for over a year and still have NOT fixed the issue. Great service team you have

Hi, I'm having the same issue as everyone has noted. If I try to connect from an old phone (if I can even find it!) or a tablet will I be able to switch it back to using my phone as the main device? The main reason for me getting a Google nest is so I can control everything from my current phone...

Ran into this problem today. Still no fix?

Still no fix!?

Any updates ? It is so frustrating.

This is still a problem. When will this be fixed? I'd like to set up my speakers and this is a ridiculous issue to encounter.

The recommend answer is from 2024 which is a workaround. The official workaround recommended is to buy a competitors phone or an old, outdated Pixel. That may be the most idiotic statement I have heard from a support organization in my life and I am almost 60! I have a feeling that the Google Home products will probably be wrapped up shortly as they cant be bothered for a fix obviously and I would be looking at another option if I were you. Google seems to be a rudderless ship with no captain who hires lawyers over programmers. What a shame.

It has been months, has there seriously been no progress?  Is your release schedule once a year or something?  What are your scrum teams even doing when a showstopper production bug like this exists?

Any update, GoogleNestTeam?

It's nearly 4 months later and the problem continues to persistent.

I have the same issue as all the other community members, with two different Pixel devices (6a and 7a, running Android OS 15/AP4A.241205.013 and 15/BP1A.250305.019, respectively) with 2 new Nest Mini 2nd Gen that just arrived yesterday. I have many other Nest devices connected to my Google Home network with no previous issues like this

It's been 6 months and this is still unresolved. "use another device or pixel running an older Android version" is not a workaround for most of us. We only have 2 devices and they are both newer pixels. We dropped $50 on a nest mini that we literally can't use. How is this still an issue after 6 months?

Tech fails during parties are the worst! For damage control, pair a sincere apology with a heartfelt belated note “The only thing more delayed than this wish is Google’s update!”

It's been 5 months since this acknowledgement of the issue was posted and it appears that Google has yet to resolve this problem.

Is there any hope for a resolution???

OMgoodness. I just used an iPad to do what my Pixel could not do. Thanks, Google.

My son used to be the tip Google Rep for EE until he left the company.  However, he said the problem exists because I'm trying to link old equipment with a new device.  Google Homes and Google Minis have been updated and I'd been trying to link some brand new but unused Google Minis and relink my Google Home after a power outage. It works fine but just won't set up properly with the modern Google phones. Basically he said it's to make you but the mire up to date equipment which seems a shame given my minis are brand new. Also it makes me afraid to unplug my minis in the bedroom when decorating, because I'd never be able to reset them up again.  I'm 70 and not a techie so wouldn't know what I was downloading if I was using anything that wasn't recognised by Google. I'm struggling with PTSD at the moment and was just trying to make life a bit easier.

I just got the Google home mini today. It is May 2025. And it's still asking for the device utility app to install it and I can't because it says I'm on a newer version of Android. You guys said you are working on a workaround in November of 2024 and still haven't found it.

So you've been working on this for 6 months and nothing?  I just don't understand why I stick with Google anymore.  More and more problems like this ....where devices (especially home) I purchased become worthless.

Further, I have a Pixel 3, which I charged, turned on, reconnected, updated passwords, found the Device Utility app, and get pending nonstop (photo).  So that effort appears good for nothing.

This is ridiculous, I've been a fan since I owned original MOTO droid.  And I disrespect Amazon as a company, but my friends who use Alexa dont seem to have as many problems as Google does (or Apple for whatever that's worth).

WTF Google. There are a ton of people that have been experiencing this issue for a very long time now and ---- NOTHING.

Heads should roll!!!!!!!

This type of "Service" from Google shows a major disrespect for its customers!!!!!

SHAME!!!!!!

Absolutely pathetic solution

How long does it take for you to fix this issue? it has been for that 6 months since you posted this, and still the same issue.

I have a Google 8 and I can't connect to my Google mini any longer. I've factory reset the unit. The unit recognizes my WiFi but won't connect, giving me the following message: "Connection problem during setup.  Could not communicate with your Google Home mini".  My security system is connected and tv but reconnect with my mini.

I opened a new Home mini box and can't set up the mini using Device Utility app, as instructed.  I receive a message saying, "This app isn't available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android".

I read in the Community stream (Nov 2024) that you're working on an s/w update to resolve this problem.  Has there been an update or a work around so that I continue using my Home mini again???  Please help.

Thank you, VL

This is a totally unacceptable answer.  Do not sell a product that can't be set up!

When will Google fix this incompatibility between a Google products, specifically pixel and home mini and device utility app?  Ignoring this problem that is affecting many customers is extremely irresponsible.  I'll think twice before buying any Google products, to include pixels cell phones.

This is bull&@#*. Completely unacceptable. Downgrading Google Home or using another device is not a solution. Fix this or refund everyone who can't connect!!!

Same issue - Pixel 8, Android 15

Same issue, @GoogleNestTeam is there any chance the Device Utility app will work on the new Android phones this week?

Trying to set up a nest mini and I'm getting the same issue: requires Device Utility app, but my phone (Pixel 7, Android 15) is listed as not compatible with the app

Did you find a way round it. I have a Pixel 7Pro Android 15.   I'm also guessing this might be why I can't reconnect my older model Google Home.
