Can't talk to camera through Nest Max Hub or Nest Hub

matt_d

I just bought a whole Nest system (Max Hub, Hub, doorbell, wired cameras) for the house.

One benefit I liked when deciding on this system was the 2-way communication via the wired cameras. I assumed (or it was implied somewhere) that I could do this via the Hubs, since they are both 2-way audio capable. Unfortunately, it only seems I can do this via the Home phone app, even when I'm watching the camera via a Hub.

I've looked through the forums and replies on this topic, seems it's been brought up for a couple years at least and been referred to as a "bug" or something that would be addressed "soon."

Is this functionality ever coming, or not? I'd hate to have to switch to a different system as I'm fairly invested in Google stuff overall.

As a current Google Nest customer, I can verify that the microphone option is available ONLY for our Google Nest Hello Doorbells and NOT for any of our Google Nesst cameras, old or new. We don't have either of the newer doorbells so I don't know if it's available for them.

I don't know whether Google Nest is planning on adding the feature for its cameras, but my guess is that even if they are, they won't tell you. It's not mentioned in the blog for the upcoming upgrade to the Google Home app:

Thanks, not what I wanted to hear but at least confirmation.

If you have the camera on the Nest Hub Max turned on, you can select the Nest Hub Max in the Google Home app on your phone, select "View Nest Cam", and then click on the microphone at the bottom of the screen to talk. You can try this at home to verify that it works.

Did you read my question? I know I can do this in the app. I want to do it via the Hub, but there is not a microphone button when I pull up the camera feed on the Hub/Hub Max.

Hey matt_d,

Thanks for reaching out. I appreciate @MplsCustomer and @Johnharper1 for helping here. I can confirm that the talk and listen feature on Google Nest displays is only available for Nest Doorbell. For more information, please visit this link.

We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take this as feedback and pass it along to the team. I also suggest that you send feedback using your devices by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback" or click here for more steps.

Let us know if we can help you with anything, or else we will close the thread after 24 hrs.

Cheers,
