Cannot ask 1 speaker to play music on another

BuildingItBlind
Community Member

This has only started recently, I have asked one speaker to play music on a group for years, but now it doesnt work anymore.

If I ask one speaker to play music on another, for example,if I ask the living room speaker, "hey google play music on bedroom speaker", or, I ask the bedroom speaker to play music on the BBQ group. All I ever get in response now is "Sorry I didn't understand", it doesnt matter what which speaker in the home I ask or which speaker I ask to play on, it still wont work. the only way I can play music is to just ask to play music and it will play on the speaker I asked, this doesnt help though when I want to play on a group or cast device. All the speakers and groups work on their own as I can cast to them all from my phone, I just can no longer do it with voice commands.

Hi BuildingItBlind,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

This is not the experience that we wanted you to have, let me help you out. Which Nest speakers/displays do you own? You can do a sequential reboot. First, unplug your Nest speakers/ displays for 30 seconds, then do the same thing to your Wi-Fi router to refresh both devices and your Wi-Fi signal. Once everything is booted up, try the feature again. If this did not help, you can delete and create a new speaker group then check if it will make a difference. Check the steps below for guidance

Delete an existing group:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. Tap your speaker group.
  4. Tap Delete group and then Remove.

Important: If you delete a group that currently casts media, group playback will stop and all audio devices in the group will stop playing.

Create an audio group:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. At the top left, tap Add and then Create speaker group.
  4. Tap each device you want to add to the group. A check Check will appear next to each device you select.
  5. Tap Next enter a name for your group Save.

Check this link for more information.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni, I have 1xGoogle Home 1st Gen, 3xGoogle Home Mini 1st gens, 2x Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen, Chromecast Ultra, Chromecast Audio, LG WK7 smart speaker, Polk audio soundbar with built in chromecast. I have rebooted all speakers and the network. A new group does not work as it will not even play to another individual speaker, let alone a group of speakers. The only speaker I can get to play music is the one I am talking to.

Hi there,

Thanks for the details you provided. Sorry that you are still experiencing the issue. Let’s further isolate your issue. Create a new home then move your speakers there and create a speaker group then observe if it will play. Here are the steps for guidance.

Create a home

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the top, tap Add Add.
  3. Tap Create new home.
  4. Follow the steps.

Note: You can have up to 5 homes in your account.

Move a device to a different home

Note: Not all devices can be moved to a different home this way. Speakers, displays, and Chromecast can be moved, but Nest Wifi point and Nest Hub Max can't. Some Nest and Wifi devices can't be moved to a different home. If you have a device that can't be moved to a different home, you need to factory reset your device and set it up again in a new home.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. Open the home the device is in.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. Tap Settings Settings and then Device information and then Home.
  5. Tap the home you want to move the device to and then Next and then Move device.
  6. If asked, tap the room you want to move the device to and then Next.

Keep me posted.

Juni

Hi, tried that, made no difference. I am just about ready to fill my home with Alexa speakers and move to Spotify.

Hi BuildingItBlind,

Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. To confirm, have you tried creating a speaker group without the non Google speakers? Let's go ahead and try to change the name of your speakers to see if you'll get the same response when playing to another speaker. Also, please provide the cast firmware version of your devices, including the third-party speakers.

Cheers,

Muddi

I have created a group with the soundbar and the chromecast audio, I can ask it to play on this group and it works. I can ask to play on the chromecast audio and it works, but none of the other speakers.

If I say "play (song) in the bedroom" it responds, "playing (song) on the bedroom speaker", but if I ask "play (song)on the bedroom speaker", it responds "sorry I didnt understand".

If I ask any speaker to play on any other speaker I get the didnt understand response, but if I set the default audio speaker to another one it will play on that speaker.

I was about to order a Pixel 7 next week, but I am holding off now as I am getting close to throwing all my Google products in the bin.

the cast firmware versions are as follows:

mini 1 - 1.56.324896
mini2 - 1.56.324896
Nest mini - 1.56.324896
google home - 1.56.324896
Soundbar - 1.36.145853
LG speaker - 1.36.157053
chromecast audio - 1.56.281627
